Narrow Wide Grinding

So 32T Blackspire Narrow Wide Snaggletooth chainring, did my 1st ride on it round Swinley on Sunday night and drive train felt very rough, I assumed it was the chain guide i'd kept on as was skeptical of the narrow wide working, anyway whipped the chain guide off today assuming it was the cause and nope, just as bad with it gone. Anyone else found this, feels as bad if not worse than having a rubbing front mech.

Chainline correct? (not hitting the chainstay is it, if mounted too far inboard), Chain shortened to big-to-ring+2? Should be smooth as anything, my RaceFace one is anyway.

What chain? Aren't these narrow/wide chain wheels only for 9 speed chains? 10 and 11 speed chains may be too narrow.

Chain alignment is perfect as is chain length. It is a 10 speed SRAM PC51 chain, so maybe that's the problem. I spoke to a friend who use Race face NW rings and he said his wasn't that bad but was not as smooth as a normal chain ring.

Hum it does say for 9 or 10 speed?

My RF NW is 10sp, that's what it was designed for, but will work with many inc 9sp.

Is it an old chain?
is it slightly dirty?
using an older chain onto a new chain ring will create a grinding noise for the first few trips until they bed in together.

I've found that mine were a little noise for the first couple of rides but quietened down after that.

In all honesty, the delightful grit they use for the trails at Swinley manages to make even my singlespeed drivetrain sound rough!
