RRC Door Seals
Discussion
Seems I have a leaking NSF door seal on my Classic. Wet carpet (no, it's not the heater matrix!) and if I pour water down the leading edge of the door, I get a further influx inside.
It looks like replacements are difficult to get? Anyone suggest a supplier, or alternatively a trick to resolve? I can't actually see any physical damage to the seal, I guess it's just compressed somewhere down it's length. It's the one where there is an interior-colour covering over the clip part, and the rubber is fixed to that, if that makes sense?

I fitted one of these a few months back. Easy to do, but it comes as one length, rather than a pre moulded rectangle so there is a join in it. Rightly or wrongly I put the join at the top of the B-pillar and it seems OK.

I'm now wondering if we are talking about the same thing...

Hmm, as far as i can see you can't detach the rubber from the clip part! So presumably not the same. If they are shaped (i.e. if they don;t come straight and you bend them to fit) then mine would have to be handed L/R?

The item carefully highlighted
below is the thing I replaced. It goes all round the door aperture and just presses on to the metal flange which is part (hopefully) of the bodyshell. You will need to unscrew and remove the tread plate, and possibly tweak a couple of other bits of trim as you go. The Rimmers item is not handed as it is just a length of rubber seal.
Mine's a 1993 4 door. Maybe yours is different?

I'm pretty sure that's what mine looked like.
You pull all that off and push the new one on.
I'll double check when I'm in the garage tomorrow as I kept the old seal "just in case"...
The new ones are black, the old ones were coloured to match your interior, but are no longer available.

Take the door card off and check the weather sheet - the plastic sheet that should be stuck to the door. These are frequently insecure, damage or missing. Rain runs down the outside of the window, past the waist seal & into the door. It then drips off the bottom of the window & onto the weather sheet which keeps it inside the door so it runs down & out of the drain slots at the bottom.
If the sheet isn't in place it drips onto the back of the door card, runs down that & into the car. All four were missing when I bought mine & I could have kept fish in the front footwells.
Very common cause of wet carpets in all makes.
The best adhesive is this stuff - think very sticky plasticine.

Yes, well worth checking the membranes in the doors. Mine weren't too bad, but there was all sorts of dust and bugs at the bottom of the door which I hoovered out before squirting a load of wax around. Check the drain holes are clear too whilst you are there.
OK, door seals - I think I know where the confusion might be. The door seal is all one piece. The door seal is BOTH the rubber AND the textured bit which I think might be what you were referring to as a metal clip. This is my old one:

I have only replaced the driver's side, so this is what the old one looks like on the passenger side. Presumably this is the same as yours?

And this is what the new one looks like on the driver's side:

Old one held next to the new one. You can see how flat the old rubber had become!:

As I mentioned, the only thing which isn't so good about the new ones is that at some point you will have a join as they are sold as a length, rather than in one piece. I put the join at the top of the B pillar.

I had wondered about doing a mitre type join, but I didn't think I could cut two 45 degree angles neatly enough so went for this. It's been waterproof so it works. It might have looked better at the bottom of the B or even A pillar as it would be out of sight.
Finally, picture from the parts book. Item number 10 is the door seal and you can see from the blurb that they used to be available in different colours, but the new ones are black only.

Hope that's a help.

That's brilliant Rick, thanks a lot for that, explains everything! So, I can't get (or not easily) the original seal but the replacement option work fine. I'll go for that, but also thanks paint man for the membrane tip, I'll check that out as well.
Looks like next weekend will be the earliest I get any decent hobby time as we have to go out today to look for something called a "kitchen", whatever one of those is!!

Well, the mystery thickens....
I did note that somebody may have aready had a go at the door membrane, as the bottom corner of the door card wasn't clipped back in properly. Yesterday, I sat MrsC inside with dry tissue placed strategically, and proceeded to pout water all over the outside.
The only place where we could find any water ingress at all was about halfway down the inside of the A-pillar (trim removed), on the inside, where a very small bead formed and trickled down to the floor. I immediately suspected the windscreen seal, but despite pouring loads more water there, nothing else appeared. However, we got a small additional trace of water when I poured the can over the sunroof....
I had already checked that the sunroof drain channels were clear (well, the front ones anyway) and they are. The only possible reason I can think of now is that someone has fitted one of those old-fashioned chrome bendy map-reading lights to the NS A-pillar, and I wonder whether in doing do they have drilled through the pipe for the sunroof drain. Easy enough to check but I ran out of time and daylight yesterday. However, the drip was so tiny that I can't see how it would have made the carpet wet (it was soaked), so I'm not convinced.
The hunt continues, methinks!

Another one to check is the scuttle accessed through the grills at the edge of the bonnet.
You can hoover out the remains of the old filter when you are in there.
Does the sunroof drain down both A pillars or just one? Is it the pipe with a valve wedged in the end in the front wheel arch?

I'll check the scuttle Rick although the water appeared when running the watering can down the A-pillar/door shut/windscreen. The drains run from the front corners of the sunroof down to just below the scuttle panel - there is a pipe fixed at the top of that void under the scuttle in front of the bulkhead. They are free and clear (I ran a mig welder liner down them) and the do drain water, although I don't know if they are leaking halfway down the run. There's no valve of any sort on the end, just an open pipe.
Ah right. I haven't been looking in the right place then. I'll look higher up!
There appears to be a drain going back to the C-pillar as well:

Do the grills just pry off? I've had a look and a bit of a test levering, but seem stuck fastYou can hoover out the remains of the old filter when you are in there.

I think there's a couple of self tappers to undo and then, yes, they pry off. You might want to wait for warm weather as they might be brittle at the moment. There is a sponge filter behind which had disintegrated on mine. I just binned it, but there are pattern ones on Ebay, or I'm sure your local aquarium supplier would find you something!CAPP0 said:

Me again. Can you see the ends of them from within the wheelarch, or do you have to take the liner out to see them?I've just stuck my head in the wheelarch and other than getting a load of muck down my neck I can't see anything.
You see...
...my sunroof doesn't open so I can't proddle them from that end. I'll need to go in from the bottom to check they are clear.Gassing Station | Land Rover | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
