Permanently disabling an xbox account - credit card shocker!
Discussion
Checking the credit card statement this morning I see that my son has been purchasing FIFA points (or whatever) without my permission. I allowed it once using his Xmas money but it seems to have remembered my card details and not required my password to make further purchases - is this the usual behaviour or have I set it up wrong?
Anyway, I would like to permanently disable his account so he loses all his points as we as paying me back the money he stole.
Alternatively could we transfer the account for a price so someone else can make use of it.

Controversial. You logged your card to his account, all that's needed after that is his password linked to his account. If you'd read the T&C's you'd have avoided this

But yes, once it's on there it's saved. The same as giving him your paypal password and then saying 'I can't believe he spent a load of my money'

The same way that if you gave your son your bank card and pin and didn't take it back and he rinsed your account, the bank would likely tell you to FRO if you claimed he stole from you.
All IMO anyway, IANAL etc etc.
OP, may be worth contacting Xbox support. People who have done this on iDevices have done the same and got refunds for it.
In future, buy a giftcard or something. Simples.

I'm saying it's not theft if the OP has added his card to his sons XBOX account and then not removed it, in the eyes of Microsoft anyway.

As above, you added the card details to his account, no different to giving him your bank card and pin and trusting him with it. I expect MS will tell you to gtfo if you claim he stole from you, they expect people to read the instructions for using their service and how card data is stored on accounts. A case of RTFM.The same way that if you gave your son your bank card and pin and didn't take it back and he rinsed your account, the bank would likely tell you to FRO if you claimed he stole from you.
Good luck with disciplining your son. How much did he charge to your card without you knowing?
He was under strict instructions not to purchase anything else without my permission. It may not stand up in a court of law but in my eyes he was stealing.
Anyway the xbox has been taken from him, as has his phone and laptop. *and* he will be paying back the money *and* doing extra chores, but anyway... is someone able to answer my question.

You can go online through the xbox live website and delete the account.Anyway the xbox has been taken from him, as has his phone and laptop. *and* he will be paying back the money *and* doing extra chores, but anyway... is someone able to answer my question.
Although I agree it was stealing and I like your parenting style of punishment - be aware that if you do delete the account ALL digital content will be lost forever, games, add-ons etc.
You would also have to go further, as FIFA is an EA game - you would have to delete that account also, this could go on for every game that your son has activated with a 3rd party.
I am not in anyway trying to interfere *but* - I would do as you have done so far, NOT delete the account but override the settings to deny access to xbox live for a set period, say Christmas 2016 lol!
good luck.

I'm really sorry to hear about that.I can't claim to know much about X-box but I do know a bit about people. Why do you need to "punish" him at all? Generally in that situation the lad will be so shocked and embarrassed that he won't do it again - and will respect you for explaining the situation and why his behaviour was not acceptable..

Are you serious? Kid knowingly spends his father's money without permission (by the sounds of it he was very clear on the fact that he wasn't to make any in game purchases) and you feel punishment is unwarranted? I'm sure being "shocked and embarrassed" is exactly what he was hoping for if he got caught, you can't let them get away with things like this, theft is wrong and they have to know it. Giving it a "boys will be boys" attitude and letting them get away unpunished is where career thieves and burglars come from.I can't claim to know much about X-box but I do know a bit about people. ... I think the punishment is a bit harsh tbh, bearing in mind its half down to the parents error...

What error did I make? Once a legitimate purchase had been made with his Xmas money the account remembers the CC details so all he had to do was click 'purchase more points' or whatever against my specific warnings.

Absolutely. If the child isn't going to do it again what possible purpose could be served by punishment? Gassing Station | Video Games | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
