Greetings from a very sunny and warm South Africa.

Unfortunatel Mrs BC has had her driving licence, a credit card and a small amount of cash stolen from our hotel room. The cc has been cancelled and was not used, the cash was not much (about £20 in Rand) but we are concerned about the licence.

The dl has our home address, her date of birth and other info so ideal for identity fraud.

Anybody have any ideas of precautions we could/should be taking?

What other info? Certainly no info that matters. Your address and DOB aren't really State secrets either.

You're worrying over nothing IMO.

I'd be worried about the address being unoccupied...

That crossed my mind but not much I can do given the distance.

I can't see that there's an international ring of thieves that are that well organised for what would probably be minor pickings.

If there are criminal gangs around waiting ready to pay for tips of address of people who've been mugged abroad so the property might be unoccupied, there is going to be a big increase in crime when these people discover facebook

Probably over cautious then but I have twice been a victim of attempted identity theft so very careful now.

The way of it back in the late 80's early 90's was if they were lucky enough to blag a driving licence and credit card the next stop would be the hire desk at one of our larger airports and hire the best set of wheels available.
Hires on top end rides were only taken on credit cards .
Next stop would be putting the vehicle into a container and be gone within a couple of days usually to a North African destination .
Some of these jobs were completed before the victim realised their loss.

Given OP's profile I can understand why he's concerned.

OP - if you're genuinely concerned then you oculd always ask a friend or relative to check in on your house every day if they've got a key. Otherwise, if you're friendly with your neighbours, give them a call and explain what's happened and ask them to be a bit more vigilant? I assume they know you're away at the moment.
