Hi all,
I'm after some advise, I've had my '58 Fiesta titanium for about 5 years now, its been a fantastic car and mechanically sound! But I recently took a new job which is 30 miles away, so a 60 mile round trip and 2-2.5 hours a day are spent in my fiesta. I'd never really noticed how much noise is transmitted into the cabin until I recently went in my sister in laws vauxhall insignia - I was really impressed with how quiet it was when doing 60-70mph. I mostly travel on A-roads now and am seriously considering a new car as the quiet the insignia provided would be greatly appreciated after a stressful days work. The thing is I don't really like anything about the insignia other than how quiet it is! I would really like a convertible again as I once had a MINI convertible but would like a step up in size and comfort.
I understand that at the weekends when driving topless its going to be loud because of the wind buffeting and general outside noise, but what convertibles would be more quiet (roof up) that my fiesta? And still be reasonably easy on fuel, I was considering switching to diesel which should return similar or better MPG figures to what I get out of my fiesta. I was thinking along the lines of a 3 year old Audi A3/A5 Cabrio, VW Golf/Eos etc. Ideas or input greatly appreciated.

If you want quiet you'll be better off looking for a hard top convertible IMO.

IIRC the A5 has an acoustic liner in the soft roof but I've never been in one at high enough speed to comment on it's effectiveness, sorry.

1 series convertible with a Petrol engine! My mum has one and it's very quiet indeed. Try one. Challenging looks for some but RWD and looks great with the roof down imo.

SAAB is quiet due to two layer roof (when it's up)

I had an A4 Cabrio and with the top up you'd never know it wasn't a coupe.

My SLK is pretty good in that regard also.

Totally agree, my wife has one (2.0L Petrol Auto) and it's very nice indeed. My wife loves it and I like driving it too !!!!

A5 is even quieter and more refined than the A4, just like a tin top in fact.

Reference the SLK, there is no roof wind noise to speak of, but at >40mph the rear tyre gives off quite a droning noise. Maybe try the VW EOS as you sit further from the wheels.

I can vouch for that ....covered 90k in 2008-10 in an Aero 1.9d.... Bliss. Blooming sunburnt face all the time tho!

Low low running costs and very quiet at sensible speeds with the roof up. The roof was getting a little saggy near the end and the beautiful well equipped interior appeared to have been subcontracted by Saab to Airfix

I would still be in one if they were still made. The last of the '60's are still out there.
