Just got back from a trip to Morocco, aside from a ponographic amount of old French metal I was particularly taken by the amount of Dacia Dusters in the road. It got me thinking about whether there is a better 'world car' than the Duster currently in production. They are phenomenal value appear pretty tough and look good to my eyes too..

Thing is, they're, well, a bit rubbish. Cheap? Yup. Any good? Not really.
If you're in the market (I do appreciate that your post doesn't suggest that you are), look elsewhere.

Not in the market no, I do have a soft spot though for proper utilitarian motors though.

What is phonographic French metal? Eths-Harmaguedon perhaps?

I'd rather not have something made from crisp packets and looks like a box on wheels just because it's cheap.

You may have missed the OP's point. Nobody really wants one but as a car to be sold everywhere in the world being cheap is the main priority. I followed one today on the A45 and was struck by how horrible it looked

I like them in principle but I heard there were instances of Dusters rusting badly already, can anybody confirm?

I had a brief fling with a woman in Delhi who drove a Dacia Duster, but it was branded as a Renault and had leather seats, air con etc. I didn't think it was too bad. Admittedly it was after spending some time in India so my standards of refinement had been lowered somewhat!

I quite like them. I keep mulling over whether to buy one to leave on the street in London and use as a town car.

Seems like it would be cheap to insure and run, very innocuous and each dent and scratch by the muppets would just make it look better.

And it's big enough to just sling everything in etc.

Yes there were problems with rust, however that has been resolved with production of UK ones having been moved from India to Romania; they are also far better built overall too, get an Indian one and a Romania one together, have a play about with shutting doors and trim pulling and prodding and even a blind man could tell that the Romania one is a far better built car.

Are all UK ones now better built then?

Apparently fixed since August 2014 but the residuals are horrendous now. Can't sell them second hand for toffee due to the bad press and trade-ins rarely fetch more than a couple of grand. Most of the ones for sale on Autotrader have been there since the end of last summer. No-one wants them.

I'll cross it off the list then, doesn't seem to live up to the hype!

If you remember the 80's you may remember the Africar. There was a Channel 4 documentary about it. It was going to solve all the transport issues in the 3rd world. Was made of plywood IIRC.

Wasn't a success, not sure why.

Er, I'd beg to differ.

We sell them new, and used ones are always in demand. The rust issues are (IMO) over exaggerated. We have only had a very small number of cars with issues and they have been rectified.

My parents have one, it has no rust. It's a great car and they love it as do most who have them.

And where have you got the 'residuals are toffee and trade ins only fetch a few grand' from?

They are basic (the facelift is a bit nicer and as HTP99 says, they 'feel' nicer) but for the price they are, they are very good value new cars.

Don't kid yourself thinking you're getting an Evoque on the cheap, that they ain't.If you want a nicer spec/more car for the money, look for a year old Scenic XMOD Bose edition. smile

The BMW 3-series is the Best World Car. Sells well in pretty much every market.

Everyone wants a bit of affordable premium badging on their driveway.

Look at the list of places this 'German' car is built: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_3_Series_%28F30%2...
