Sky HD - funny video look to HD?
Discussion
Is it just me but a lot of the films on the Sky HD channels have a funny video look (rather than smooth film). Last night the Chronicles of Riddick was on and it had a funny over sharpened look to it and movement was strange, hard to explain exactly. Popped in the Blu Ray of the same film and much better(completely different class).
Does SKY HD over sharpen the image? Are they dropping frames to stay within bandwidth? Some funny compression going on? Can't put my finger on it.

Might be worth checking the settings on your TV aren't different* between either the two different HDMI inputs and/or between the 1080/50i input from the Sky box compared to the 1080/24p signal from the BluRay version. I'm thinking mainly of frame creation type modes, but other settings such as gamma and general calibration controls may possibly give a different effect to the two sources.
* Many TVs allow different settings for each input and some will respond differently according to the refresh rate being input. Some settings won't apply for 1080/24p that may apply for 1080/50i so it may appear that they are both set the same.

My Sky HD / TV combination can create a very odd look from time to time, so I'm wondering whether this is what you are seeing.
What happens is the HD picture appears to drop the frame rate by half, so the picture sort of "judders" and if you look closely, you can see that the picture is jumping up and down by a pixel every frame. Makes the screen look very odd and induces a strange "seasick" feeling in whoever is watching.
To fix this, I have to change to an SD channel, wait for the HDMI to re-sync then switch back to the HD channel then wait for it to re-sync again. This usually fixes it. Must be some sort of strange HD HDMI sync issue between the TV and the Sky box.
Cheers,
Steve

What tv have you got? As i had the same issue last week with my new panasonic LED. Watching breaking bad & other stuff like that and it seemed like it was shot on a Sanyo vhs handycam. It was the Intelligent frame creation that makes the picture look crap. I turned it off and all was fine.

The TV is a Samsung UE55ES8000. Whatever is happening, it doesn't look "intelligent". It looks awful!http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=15...
