996 Sports Exhausts

Does that include the switch?
If it does, get a quote just for the exhaust.....the switch is very time consuming to install so will no doubt account for a good £600+ of that quote!
The switch is a nice idea but is something that would rarely get used IMO. The exhaust noise is very controllable with the accel pedal so only really gets loud when you floor it. It really is a work of art!

Yes that is with the switch, they said it was 7 hours of labour which I found very difficult to believe. The same garage quoted me £2,500 for a new roof on a boxster S when only the rear panel needed repairing so I am somewhat cagey about paying them any money. Thanks for your help on this I will think a bit more and maybe take the plunge. I feel more comfortable with Porsche parts than other brands
Pick up the exhaust for around £600 plus VAT (I found a couple of new units from breakers available when I looked about 6 months ago)
Then get a specialist to fit just the boxes, and not bother with the switch or wiring it into the ECU.
The valves that open & close at certain revs will need to be fixed in the open position - which is easy to do.
Ro.

The switch is very time consuming so 7 hours is probably not too far out to be honest........I really wouldn't bother having the switch......I reckon you could get the exhaust fitted for around £1350 by shopping around a bit.
I think I read somewhere that an independant dealer somewhere was able to source the PSE at a very reasonable rate.

Do a search on my profile and you'll see everything that I had done a few months ago. I had it fitted without even hearing it, and it's superb. I had the switch because it's wonderful to have access to that level of engineering. Although it seems expensive, it really is worth it. Don't get it done at an OPC due to the cost.
the sports exhaust comprises a modded back box with a vacuum controlled valve which opens/closes a flap, allowing some of the sound to bypass the silencer section of the back box. The bypass pipe is about 12mm dia, and even has a "ragged" edge on this inside to give the 'raspy' sound.... If you know someone who can fabricate-up some short lengths (about 250mm) of curved stainless pipe, cut these-in between the two relevant points and weld-it-up, you'll have the sports sound. My old car had the proper boxes (without automatic operation) and it sounds great. I've got some photo's somwhere of where the pipes have to go - it really is quite a simple mod - say a day for one man = probably £200:00, plus the cost of the boxes. They are often on e-bay, in fact I think there's a pair on there now.. The only problem I can see is getting someone who can do the work.
...i have the non-switchable Porsche sports exhaust on my 996. It sounds simply awesome. Ican't think that i would turn it off if i had a switch as it isn't at all boomy on the motorway. Cabin noise increases if you plant the right foot
but on partial throttle it is not too intrusive and can certainly listen to the stereo easily.
Ah go on...go on...go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on!!

like some of you, have looked into it over 4 months. i now have had the fabspeed for 2 months on 2004 4cs. fantastic is all i can say. there is absolutely no 'boom' indicated by somebody else. the quality is tops. in partnership with larger air intakes, feels, is, sounds, faster. there is an increase in rev range
