Pulsing head/dash lights

The headlights and dash lights are pulsing on my '99 450, but not all the time. I found one other thread on here that suggested that it could be the alternator/rectifier on the way out but I wanted to check with you guys.

There's no obvious pattern that I've spotted. They can pulse from cold or when the engine is hot. They seem to stop pulsing when there's an electrical load present (fans come on). Occasionally (?) they'll remain not pulsing after this. I've not checked the 100A fuse but that was replaced only 1 year ago and mine seem to last 3ish.

The alternator is original at 15yrs and 89,000 miles. Help!

I had the same symptoms as yourself on another car and it was indeed the alternator on it's way out.

Thanks both. The existing one is (looks like genuine Land Rover) Magneti Marelli A127IM-100A (AMR 4247).

I've found the same for about £700!!!! or presumably OEM for about £100 at places like: lrdirect.com and britishparts.co.uk. Any comments on Denso vs BritPart?

Try taking to an auto electrical place an d get the original refurbed. New brushes and a new state place is probably all it needs.
Could well be a lot less than £ 100. Worth a phone call

I bought a replacement alternator from a local independent land rover specialist for £120 and whilst it said Denso on the box it came in, when I opened it up it said Magnetti Marelli on it and was an exact replacement of the original! Local Land Rover main dealer wanted about £450 for a replacement alternator.

They take them off new LRs to upgrade for the military. Give them a call to check availability.
