Speeding fines and debts to the address.
Discussion
I bought my current house 18 months ago.
Seems the silly cow who used to live here never got her mail re-directed, and i've been getting a constant stream of it. I may have inadvertently opened a couple (you know how it is, the name is obscured by the top of the envelope and you just see the address), and recently i've had a barrage of threatening debt letters and even speeding fine letters. The ones i've opened, i've just binned, although some i've returned to sender (but they still keep coming).
My worry is, am i going to get some bailiffs or the Police trying to put my door in, thinking this daft bint still lives here?

Have you informed the estate agent, who acted for the seller, that you are still receiving mail - and you 'think' some of it is official.
The ones that you are worried about most...
Is the return address on the envelope, the company concerned, or a mailing house drop box?
If it is ABC debt co, I would be dropping them my own letter (recorded) to say (Dear Sirs) that you have been returning post for the previous owner to them over a few months, but they are still sending it to you.
Give them the names of the estate agent and the solicitor company that dealt with the other side of the sale.
Belt and braces would be to include a stamped addressed envelope for them to confirm back to you, that they have recorded these facts.
Or,
Bury your head and hope.

IANAL but i think under law there is provision for you to open mail that has arrived at your address even if it's for another person, IRC as long as you are not intending to do them harm or commit fraud. (no doubt a legal bod will be along to put me straight)
me i would send it back in an envelope to the various parties, recorded as has been suggested and let them know you have a record of when you sent the info back.
i've had to do something similar at 2 addresses that i've lived at, the first the old owners were still trying to get credit using my address 6 months after the move and we were still getting threatening letters from lloyds about their overdraft.
and oddly we are now getting it at my present place, i say oddly as my wife owned the place before we met, and has been there 16 years now, but all of a sudden we have been getting letters about someone buying a place in colchester (we live in south essex). It's our address but the wrong name, spoken to quite a few neighbours, no one recognises the name. i've spoken to the estate agents, but they stupidly wrote again to confirm the address, to us! i just send it back now

I had a similar situation. I ended up phoning two different agencies and talking to their collection people. Letters got ignored, but actually talking to someone got it sorted. The letters stopped a few weeks after speaking to them, they did say it probably wouldn't be immediate as the letters are automated, sent as cheaply as possible and getting a stop put through isn't immediate.
We had this and ended up being woken at 5am on a sunday morning by a lazy Bailiff, his company couldnt be arsed to check their facts and just pitched up.
Do not ignore return everything properly, as the previous poster has said contact the estate agent and solicitor who acted for the other side, and I would do a credit check if I were you as debts against an address can be recorded.

Doesn't make any difference, I must have put that 20 times on a student loans company letters to someone who used to live at my old house. They kept coming!
Deepends on the sender some will do searches to find the new address. Some like the student loan people will do nothing and keeping sending them, the point is you have done what you can to notify them that the recipient no longer lives at that address.

Simple way to check - look up the company on the net. If return address= company address, then mark in Red "not known". If address is not company address, then Mark prominently "NOT AT THIS ADDRESS/NOT KNOWN" and add RTS ,with the company address on a label, RECORD DATE OF LETTER. . Second letter, open ,add a note inside, re seal. Attach a label with company address and add "opened in error, RTS & SURCHARGE". RECORD DATE OF LETTER.The ones that you are worried about most...

Third letter- write a strong letter ,mentioning harassment, dates of replies etc to MD at company address, asking if the Company might like some publicity.
This happened to me in my current house;
I return all mail with not know at this address on it and to be fair most of it has stopped.
We have had a few court orders turn up and eventually the bailiff’s turned up - these were high court bailiffs with a warrant for ex occupier’s arrest, according to them, for unpaid court fines. Extremely professional and polite in fairness (i only spoke on the phone as my partner was at home), she stated that it wasn’t her, ensured windows / gates were locked as they did try snooping around the sides of the house to check the back and patio door.
Anyway I asked them to update their database that she was no longer at this address and I've heard nothing since nor had anymore letters.

From the bold above, I assumed you had already been doing the RTS/return to Sender thing and that it had not worked?Seems the silly cow who used to live here never got her mail re-directed, and i've been getting a constant stream of it.
