I'm trying to put on muscle but for an ectomorph like me I know 75% of the results are in the kitchen!

How long should one wait after eating before going the gym?

My current schedule is like this, am I on the right lines?

05:45 'total breakfast' from myProtein with 400ml milk
10:00 oats & protein bar or similar
12:30 proper lunch, carbs, protein and veg etc. - no junk food
16:30 70g oats, 35g protein and 300ml milk (just before leaving the office)
18:00 been home, changed, now at the gym
19:00 post workout protein drink and a cycle home
19:30 proper dinner, carbs, protein and veg etc. - no junk food

Cheers guys

Looks like a poor attempt at a weight loss diet. That is nowhere near enough food for someone wanting to grow.

Use full fat milk.
what's your proper lunch/dinner?

2-3 hours after eating is fine or sooner if you can handle it. Depending on what I eat pre workout dictates wether I train a hour later or 2-3 hours later smile

From your ectomorph description I am likely to be a similar build to you and i'll give you my eating timetable below. I'm not a calorie counter by any means and use the gym as a means to stay active and let me eat what and when I want.

I do have the luxury of a restaurant at work though...

Up at 0625 but can't struggle to eat upon waking up.
0730 - Porridge
0945 - 2 poached eggs and beans
1200 - Good sized lunch.
1400 - snack (fruit)
1700 - Naked bar or oat bar kind of thing pre gym
1930 - Dinner

I gym Monday, Tuesday, football Wednesday, night off Thursday, either football or gym Friday and then either a Saturday or Sunday gym session too.

Meal timing isn't much of an issue when bulking, ( only when cutting or more so when entering a comp) just need to make sure that your eating in a surplus, do you know how many calories who body needs????

eating before working out, that timing is individual to every one, i am sluggish if i have carbs before a workout, ( i eat fats). Best way is to test for performance on foods prior to gym session and see how you felt during the workout.

Eat as much as you can as often as you can. Lift heavy things. Enjoy not being skinny.

Wot 'e said!!!

Diet is important and you really don't seem to be eating anywhere near enough if you're training properly hard. Out of interest post your programme up and we can have a look through it for you

Incorrect,

Infact the opposite is true. If you are trying to lose weight and set yourself a goal of say, 2000 calories a day, there is no difference in the metabolic cost it has if you split that between 6 meals or have it all in one go.

If you're bulking though you need regular protein synthesis which means frequant high protein meals.

I always eat a meal around 5:15pm and train at around 6:30pm. I also have a banana around 20-30 minutes before. I then have a whey protein shake with glycomaize straight after my workout. If it's any use when I was bulking I worked up to 3400 calories a day. Can't fully remember my macros but I was getting at least 290 grams of protein in there. Probably about 350 grams of carbs in there too.

Am I not eating enough? I am a bit surprised, going to have to think about how I can squeeze in extra meals/snacks. This is made more difficult by the fact I have a brace and can’t eat anything which is even slightly hard or tough.

FYI I’m 6’1 and 68kg…I’ve been this size and weight all of my adult life, even when I go mad at Christmas with fat food and beer all’s it does is give me a pot belly which is gone by the morning.

Not perfected my work out routine yet although I did plan to do 4 days a week for proportion, but I’ve read a few times that for someone like me I need big weights and therefore longer resting periods in which case a 3 day routine is better.

One other thing, I cycle to the gym (1.9 miles) as its too short a journey for a car (this is PH!!), is this cardio knocking me back?

Sorry, that is total bs. As long as you are getting enough protein in during the day (aim for at least 1.6g protein per kg bodyweight) you can eat it whenever you want.

If you feel that's going to work for you then best of luck. But I knwo for a fact that it doesn't work for me or anyone that I train with.

Completely agree! You need to eat every 2-3 hours. Protein in every meal. And personally I would have a lot more protein than 1.6g per kg. I weigh around 78kg currently on a cut and I'm having 281g protein a day.

Bro bs?! It's a forum full of opinions. Mine are based on diets used by people who I know who compete and bodybuilders and physique athletes that share their diet information. I'm genuinely happy to read your opinions and the back up you have for it. I'm just sharing what works for me and others I follow. I believe timing of meals is important to remain anabolic. Hence why casein is such a great source of protein before sleep.

Bro BS? Grow up. You seem so set on your opinion care to provide any form of evidence to back it up? The part about eating the protein, i took from an Article written by one of My coaches. Below are his qualifications.

BSc Sports Development and Coaching Sciences
MSc Sports Management
UKSCA Accredited S&C Coach
Active IQ Level 3 Personal Trainer
Advanced Nutrition for Physical Performance
Level 3 Volleyball Coach

It is certinley not Bro BS
