Aluminium cars and corrosion
Discussion
Going to view a jag xkr today.
The dealer has honestly pointed out and sent pics of a small paint blister on the bottom of a door.
Having searched alu corrosion it's seems to be quite a problem.
So what will these cars be like at 10-12 yrs old or older?
Thing is this car might be 6 yrs old but it's still quite a bit of cash.
Maybe you have to just live with it or leave well alone and buy steel?

Aluminium seems to be more permanently repairable than steel. In the sense that, if you apply filler to a steel rusty panel even though you have cleaned it up as best you could, eventually the filler will crack due to corrosion continuing.
My experience of Landrover ally panels is that if cleaned up properly and filled, the repair can be considered permanent.
But nevertheless, damaged repaired panels need to be painted, and that is not cheap.

Jaguar seem to have had lots of problems with the X350 XJ models, every single one I looked at had corrosion problems and it's not unknown for the earth strap mounting points to corrode right through. Also saw lots of facelift S-Types with corrosion on the aluminium bonnets. I guess it is due to galvanic corrosion or contamination under the paint, and as such is either a design of manufacturing problem and as such they should have found workarounds for the newer cars.
I'm a bit surprised that something 6 years old has that problem as it's 12 years this year since they started selling aluminium bodied cars so they should have got the hang of it now. Can't say I've every seen an corroded Audi A8.
