Traffic lights
Discussion
I am seeking views on this situation. I have looked through the HC and can't find the particular set of lights at the junction down the road near us.
The nearest I can find to it is this :-

Imagine this without the bit above the green filter light, so it's just basic Red, Amber, Green and a filter light to the right.
The green filter only comes on when the Red is illuminated, but on occasions I have behind cars waiting to turn right and no traffic coming, they sit there waiting for the filter light to come on.
Now my view is that as there is no red filter light, if the green is not on, and ahead is showing green, providing it is safe, you can turn right. Am I right or wrong.

P.S. Probably wrong place for this, most of mine, feel free to move it.

If there's not a red on the filter lane then you're good to go.
OP, you are correct. As was I. Despite the horn blast they remained stationary there for several minutes afterwards.

Nathan, thanks for editing the title for me.

do people really believe this?
it's total nonsense, they are not 2 sets of lights, they are one, if the light is red, you can't go, except when there is a green filter light showing.
Think about it like this, if you did not know the junction already, you have no idea what the other light would show, until it lights up, it would not be much good if you had a system where those who've been to a junction previously can go, but those who don't know it can not.

Try watching cars on box junctions, it's obviously rocket science to some it's total nonsense, they are not 2 sets of lights, they are one, if the light is red, you can't go, except when there is a green filter light showing.

as are traffic lights.
It's fairly clear in the highway code
177
Green filter arrow. This indicates a filter lane only. Do not enter that lane unless you want to go in the direction of the arrow. You may proceed in the direction of the green arrow when it, or the full green light shows. Give other traffic, especially cyclists, time and room to move into the correct lane.

I believe if it isn't illuminated then give way to those coming towards you but when it's illuminated you have right of way and the other traffic should be stopped.
I did however do what that Peugeot did back when I was 16 first on my scooter/bike. Looked for the answer the same day to find I was in the wrong and haven't done it since

That's how I understand it. You proceed to turn right when the right pointing green arrow is illuminated. Otherwise you sit tight, whether or not the road is clear. it's total nonsense, they are not 2 sets of lights, they are one, if the light is red, you can't go, except when there is a green filter light showing.

There's a set of traffic lights local to me that are exactly the same layout.
You can turn right on the normal green but will have to give way to on-coming traffic.
You can also turn right on the green arrow when there will be no on-coming traffic; that will be stopped by their red light.

This. Can get pretty annoying when the road is clear but no filter light on, sit waiting because the numpty at the front wont move then the filter light comes on and lets 2 cars thought. You can turn right on the normal green but will have to give way to on-coming traffic.

Obviously the green filter comes on when the oncoming traffic has a red.
Pity it's not in the HC.

I never realised it was such a problem, even drivers in Chesterfield seem to have grasped that....You can turn right on the normal green but will have to give way to on-coming traffic.

If anyone knows the one way system in Lancaster, there is a set of lights where you can go straight on to head towards Morecambe or turn left to head into the city centre.
The number of people who stop on red and ignore the left filer green, but will turn left once the straight on turn green is staggering. (I hope that makes sense??)
The other similar'ish situation is it at the Lancaster Junction joining the M6 northbound as if you are heading towards Lancaster.
It has a set of lights to head straight on towards Lancaster, and a giveway sign for turning left onto the M6...again, a staggering amount of people sit waiting for the straight ahead lights to go green instead of paying attention to the Giveway sign to turn left...despite people leaning on their horns.

Watch this. Seems pretty clear to me, don't need the filter to be on to make the turn.

I'm amazed there are people having problems with this (not on here obviously), as even near me they seem to have grasped this concept. This is in a place where people leap into the right hand lane, as they are turning right two miles amd three sets of traffic lights down the road.
Within half a mile of me there are lights where the left hand green filter is permanently on amd everyone turns left all the time. There is a right filter and people correctly turn right when there is no traffic approaching, even when the filter is off. Finally there is another set that has two sets of full RAG lights side by side, one for straight on and one for turning right. Everyone correctly waits for the full RAG set to turn green before turning right, even if no traffic is approaching, which is most of the time due to the idiotic phasing of those lights.

I was behind someone who got confused recently.
https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Eston+Cleveland+E...
It was at a junction where the exit of a supermarket joins the main road. The junction is controlled by lights and on the main road the lights are duplicated at the start and end of the junction as can be seen in the link. I was behind a car that was pulling out onto the main road and turning right. The light went green so he pulled out but as he turned he noticed that the duplicate set of lights for the main road at the exit of the junction were on red, so he stopped and waited for them to turn green...
Thankfully it was late and there weren't many cars about.
