Hi all,
Went to buy some more Fabsil to proof the roof on my 450 and noticed that there is now "Fabsil Gold" that has 5 times the level of silicone in it. However, if you look at the technical sheets, you notice that the Gold doesn't have the UV protection that the Fabsil Standard has.

I enquired with the Manufacturer and their technical guy responded that they had to remove the UV protection element from Fabsil Gold in order to get the extra silicone in. They recommended Fabsil Standard as being better suited to car roofs as the UV protection will prolong the life of the material. They recommended just putting a second coat of Standard on if needed.

Thought others might find this useful.

Cheers.

I used standard Fabsil on my Brabus Roadster Coupe and it was rather good - high water beading and no staining. Sorry, I've no experience of the Gold variety.

All the best.

Ive used the Thomson water seal with good effect in the past- but you need to use the origional type, not the ultra type.

I wasnt going to admit that, but I use Waterseal too, loads cheaper and works perfectly...

I use the Fabsil standard and put two coats on. I don't do many miles but find it lasts at least 2 years.
I bought 2.5 l of the stuff about 5 years ago and have probably still got 1 - 1.5 l left. smile

I am having a new roof fitted next month. Will the new roof be waterproof or do I need to fabsil it?

Ask them before you drive the beasty away. I would say no though.

The material used in new hoods is waterproofed as part of its manufacturing process, so it lasts far longer than any remedial treatment with Fabsil or Thomsons. Some Mohair-type hoods (e.g. Stayfast & Twillfast) are composite materials with a waterproof membrane.

No to it being waterproof. Poor some water on and see if it beads off.

I bought an ex-factory new/old stock roof from a TVR dealership and had that fitted. I asked this question and was told it would have been proofed (which you would expect). However, it did leak quite a bit and needed two coats of Fabsil to resolve.
I am guessing that this was due to the original waterproofing going off whilst it was in store rather than it not having any in the first place.
