Hi All,

My son's 18th is coming up and I would like to buy him a watch. My budget is up to £2000 and I think he would like a Chrono on a leather strap. Something he can wear casually or with a suit. He is tall with huge hands so something at least 41mm.

I started looking at the Hamilton JazzMaster and now seen the Oris which I like the look of. Anyway, before I pull the trigger I'd like to ask if anyone has any experience with Oris or more specifically with this watch and whether there is something else I should be looking at.

Cheers,

Dicky

If your budget could stretch a bit, how about this from Muehle Glasshuette:

44mm too so should suit a man sized wrist.

Looks wallet twitchingly nice to me thumbup

I haven't got experience with that particular model, but I do have an Oris watch - a BC3. It keeps good time and I'm really pleased with it.

Nothing wrong with Oris, have a look through Longines Master, Conquest, Hydroconquest and Heritage ranges as well. Some real crackers there though they tend to top out at 41/42mm with many below so not all models may be suitable.

I have both an E39 530i (saloon) and ST220 (estate) so can provide some analysis.

The E39 feels more solid, has the sweeter engine and rides better (16" vs 18"). However, all E39 models will need some money spent on a suspension refresh and possibly cooling components. There are many available but not that many good examples so similar to an E46 M3.

By contrast, the ST220 is the more modern car, is cheaper to run (bar fuel) and cheaper to maintain in general. If you suggest a £3k budget then the ST220 will be approx 5 years newer.

The ST220 has better spec as standard with most having electric, heated recarro seats (more comfy than non sort BMW seats), 6 speed box, touch screen sat nav and heated front window.

You also have the FWD vs RWD. I prefer the way the BMW feels but in daily use it probably does not make that much difference.

I have had 10 or so BMWs and a couple of ST220 and believe you would be more than happy whichever way you went.

Is this a metaphor?

Anyway...I'd save a bit of cash personally and buy him a Sinn 358 or Stowa chrono.

I've got a Oris TT1 chronograph

when I got mine I was considering Oris, Longines and a Tag for a bit more money

I tried several on and found very little difference between them on build quality ( all being very good),

but the Oris had the display back which i really liked and just felt better on my wrist + at the time I bought mine it was on offer at Goldsmiths so it was a no brainer for me.

I've had mine for 18 months now with no regrets and still enjoy wearing it.

From experience Oris and Longines makes great watches (better than Hamilton, IMO, and certainly better than TAG Heuer). I imagine Mühle makes great watches too, but I've no personal experience of them.

I highly recommend browsing through the various chronographs made by Damasko. See page 3 onwards on this link. Having owned Oris, Longines and Damasko, there's no comparison: Damasko quality, materials and attention to detail are in a totally different league (i.e. considerably better than anything Swiss in the same price bracket). However, Damasko chronographs look quite different from the Artix.

Happy browsing - I hope your son appreciates his luck!
