Sad news, dont know if it's been posted before as I havn't been online for a few weeks.
The Avon and Somerset safety camera partnership will be operating 24hrs a day from Monday 10th Jan.
Obviously they're going to be alot more difficult to spot at night so be warned everyone!
I thought they were supposed to be a visible deterrent to speeding - yeah right!!
Do other countys operate at night yet or are we the first here in Somerset?

Interesting...

According to a quote from another site (Cumbria silly camera pratnership)

Page 26 of Rules and Guidance for the National Safety Camera Programme for England and Wales for 2005/06 states:
SomeRuleBook said:
Rule 5: Site Visibility

Speed Camera Housings, or the camera operator, or mobile vehicle, must comply with the following minimum visibility distances:

60 metres where the speed limit is 40mph or less
100 metres at all other speeds

this is third hand but I see no reason to think this is unreasonable and if this is the case how are they going to make themselves this visible at night?

The taxing bar stewards make it up as they go along.

You'll still be able to see 100m in the dark.....otherwise you'll need fog lights......(legally..)

Not much use when they scam you from 500 metres or more

Interestingly someone has just asked this over on the Cumbria site. If you clock drivers at up to 1000m but you are only visible from 100m doesn't that make the operation covert, not overt?

Don't mind about this in built up areas, but I believe they will target the M6 as well. Think we can expect an increase in the number of sleep related incidents, then...?

It simply proves that safety und slowing people down on a so-called dangerous road simply IS not on the agenda AND money ist!

Personally I think it's a marvelous move. Greed is rapidly overtaking caution for these parasites and the public will become even more alienated. A whole swathe of scameras were pulled out of the ground in S Cambs and talivans may soon become targets.

Treat us like criminals and we may as well act and become criminals.

They must have produced a business case which suggested it would be worthwhile...

The business case will rest upon the overtime cost being covered by fining almost every driver travelling on the quiet roads alone at night. Most will be driving according to the conditions and exceeding the speed limits.

What's the betting they'll soon realise they'll need two operatives in the vehicle late at night due to incidents with aggrieved motorists? That'll stuff their business plan.

I'm with Apache - they're adding nails to their coffins.

I agree. They aren't listening. You lead the public with a carrot, not by hitting them with a stick. If I see them switch to a bigger stick, I will perhaps reconsider my position as a law abiding citizen.

I think this could very easily explain the increase in chavlike behaviour on our roads now, I certainly think 'F**K em!'
