Need a bit of advice...

I am looking at buying a new car to replace my current one, but trying to get my head around the logistics of the swap without losing out to low part exchanges. Its only a K11 Micra so will be worth pittance in part ex or at webuyanycar. I use my car everyday to commute to work, so can not be without a car. Ideally I will buy the new car, and then sell my old car. The problem comes with what to do with insurance on the cars while I have both. I want to transfer my current policy to the new car, but will need the old car to be insured at the same time. Will my insurers let me have both cars on the same policy for a month? I cant leave the old car uninsured as I do not have anywhere off the road to store it.

What have you guys done in a similar position.

Some will, some won't. Ask them.

Most insurance give you a grace period where they will insure both, sometimes for a bit more of a premium

Your insurance company should be able to cover both for a finite amount of time for a minimal outlay.

Alternatively day insure or similar. Though usually more costly

If it's worth feck all then just chop it in.

Selling a car that's worth feck all like that can be hard work. You will be dealing with all the riff raff wanting the moon on a stick for £200.

Chop it in and forget about it

The typical PBCD approach is to sell the old one you have to anyone who'll take it (scrap dealer if necessary) to clear the spare space you have on your drive. (Yes, had a similar issue but have two cars so had to get rid of one to make space for a new one.)

FWIW, most insurers will insure you FOC for 1 day on both cars; you're best off buying from a dealer who will at least give you something for your current car meaning you don't go without a car. It's not ideal but it's probably cheaper and less hassle than renting a drive or garage just to make sure you don't have an uninsured car on the road and get in trouble.

Thanks very much, looks like a phone call is due to my insurers then.

Not sure the dealers will be particularly excited about getting my car as trade in though, shall see what they say.

They'll just offer a really low amount. Depends how much of an easy life you want. smile

I stick a deposit on the new car, get a PX price then ask for 2 weeks to sell old car.
If I can't sell at a decent price just chop it in.

A girl I know went to a Toyota dealership with a K11 Micra looking at swapping it for an Aygo. The salesman offered her £1,000 for it straight away, even after he saw it was caved in down one side. He'd have pretended to offer her a £1,000 discount some other way had she not had that car to part exchange. It's all just playing with numbers.

Yeah, more like her passed her his number and suggested they go out for a drink so he could give her doors a good slamming smile

Is this what passes as humour on here now?

Frozen sausages, bum his dog, etc etc. May as well get them all out of the way early.
