Anyone on here use one, what was your previous body if so?

May upgrade my ageing D90 in the not so distant future, was my first (and only) DSLR, didn't think the D90 - D7000 jump was big enough when it came out, plus was still getting to grips with using a 'proper' camera.

High ISO usability would be the biggest draw I guess, can't really push the D90 beyond 800 with acceptable results.

Any feedback welcome.

I don't own a D7100 but do own the D7000 and can confirm that I regularily use 3200 ISO with what I think are acceptable results (I shoot raw and apply noise reduction in post but the JPEGs ive seen out of the camera are also acceptable on low noise reduction). Grain doesn't offend me though. Colours noise does... and I find the D7000 generally behaves itself upto about 3200 so in theory, the D7100 should be even better.

I used to own the D5000 which has the same sensor as the D90 which I found acceptable (although do recall it being very grainy) up to around 1600iso. The D7000 defo performs better.

Not exactly the answer you wanted, I have a D90 and wanted to try a more modern more pixel sensor,
my cheapest way was a d3200 (£150) I now use it more than the D90, the only problem is that as it`s a not very pro model there is not enough control, which you would fix with a d7100
so in summary,do it

Cheers chaps.

It's a question of when not if, although I do need to get out and use a camera (whichever it is) more, I've been very slack over the last year or so.

The only other thing that creeps into the back of my head is to go FF into a D610 perhaps which can be pegged down into DX format anyway.

I got one last year to replace my ageing D300s, I've never looked back since (despite people telling me its not a 'pro' spec camera)

I don't tend to shoot high ISO but when I was out on Hot Blade I was having to bounce around between ISO 1000-1600 for the night launches, the images were perfectly useable and were also used in the article.

Few examples... ISO 1600

ISO 1000

ISO 800

I did get a battery grip for it though as it felt a little small compared to the D300s. IMO its a fantastic camera and for the money I think you'd find anything that could beat it, a photog I know traded in his D800E for it... But I guess it comes down to personal preference, the images are so clear and sharp compared to my D300s and the crop ability is a real advantage sometimes as well.

I sold 2 x D3s (previous top pro Nikon camera) to buy 2 x D7100
fab camera...
good high-ISO, though not quite as good as the D3s
but same processor / engine etc.

just come back from a 3 day professional shoot in Spain - using them both (and an iphone!)

but you can get above ISO 800 with a D90...
try slightly over-exposing and then dropping it back in post production - digital sensors are roughly exponential in how they gather information - with far more gathered at the top end (brighter) end of the histogram... the issue with dark photography is that the photographer often fights using higher ISO, so keeps it as low as possible - taking a dark photo, which they then lighten on the computer - better to take a lighter photo at a higher ISO and then darken it - get to the same point, but with more information in the photo...

Yup, I recently bought a D7100 to replace my D90. Nothing really wrong with the D90, but Mrs Gaspode seems to have commandeered it so it was an excuse to scratch my gadget itch. I use it with the 18-140 zoom, and I love it. I expected the scenes and effects settings to be pretty naff, but actually they are quite fun.
