Redundancy and ongoing medical treatment
Discussion
If someone is being made redundant from their company, and they are receiving ongoing medical treatment for a long term condition under the company's medical insurance policy (benefit in kind via AXA), does the employer have any obligation towards the employee regarding this cover continuing after redundancy?
Having to switching to a personal policy would mean the monthly charge would go from around £32 a month (which the employee currently only pays tax on) up to nearly £500 a month, as there is a pre-existing condition.
(Note, the condition is one which is covered by the Disability Discrimination Act if that is at all relevant).

When a close friend was in the same situation they negotiated an extension of 6 months for the private policy with their employer
Company was understanding & cooperative.
Yes, it seems that is what used to happen... but apparently AXA don't allow that any more on their corporate policies, they insist the person is switched over to a personal policy, which would be nearly £500 a month. Company was understanding & cooperative.
Even if the company contributes for 6 months, AXA only do 12 month policies. So it would mean signing up to something which (even if back in employment after the 1st 6 months) would be an unsustainable monthly amount to be paying, once the company contribution was gone.
Not looking good, seems like going back to the NHS may be the only option

I have had this exact type of situation. There is no obligation for the company to provide cover past the termination date, unless there are any specific clauses that provide for that in the terms and conditions. Normally the broker or PHI company will have a specific department that will try to retain/look after/maintain call it what you want company/group members onto an individual member policy.
They need to either try and negotiate with the employer, or AXA, who claim that they will extend cover. (at what cost is a different matter of course)

If you take out healthcare cover as a new member, your existing medical conditions are likely to be taken into account and may be excluded from your plan. However, if you’ve been covered by AXA PPP healthcare on a scheme provided by your employer, you can continue your cover on a personal plan with no changes to the way that we cover your medical history.
This means that if you have previously been covered for a particular condition and have made a claim in the past, we can still cover you for ongoing treatment for that condition, subject to the terms and conditions of your new plan.
We can only offer this for a short amount of time after you leave your company scheme, so it’s always best to get in touch as soon as possible.

There's the problem. Yes, they can continue the cover but the monthly premium jumps 1500%.https://www.axappphealthcare.co.uk/personal/privat...

And excluding the existing condition brings the price down, but the whole point of the exercise is to be able to continue the ongoing treatment for the existing condition... so it makes the whole thing pointless!
