Am I mad?
Considering taking the Wedge to Rome and back in July....... (from the UK south coast, not from Scotland).
Was thinking ferry from Plymouth, down the French coast, across the bottom to Monaco, around the corner and down the west coast of the boot. Home via Austria, Alps, middle of France, Paris and back. Two weeks....
Back of a fag packet calculations suggest a grand for fuel.......
(Years ago, took an MG Midget from Birmingham to Nice and back......)

Do it, highly recommended European Wedge run outs, that is. The Wedge, perfect fodder for European roads, but don't go to early for the Alps, as the passes may be closed ( even that has it's perks, open top wedge on an open train carriage, staring at the snow top peaks every time you come out of a tunnel. magic.

Watch out for the Italian drivers (especially in Rome). Loopy ain't the word for it and I did consider it would be the ultimate run through one of the tunnels but they regulate the speed and 8 miles of smog (Fréjus).... glad we could shut the vents and recirculate the air. July will be tad hot as well, make sure your cooling is bang on.
Edit. The service station food was absolutely superb and better than a few Italian restaurants I have eaten in over here. Balsamic vinegar, good stuff not the cheap stuff, and good olive oil FOC for the superb salads etc. Forgot about my love of all things inabun, that may or may not actually have some cow in them, even if it was lips and hooves.

We did a similar trip in the Chimaera a few years back. To set targets we pre booked all the accommodation in advance. Coming back we we headed for Chamonix and thought the motorway to the Mont Blanc Tunnel was light..nobody told us it was closed! The alternate route was somewhat interesting!
Go for it - but just make sure you have good European Breakdown cover.
My 400SE didn't like the French fuel last year and the fuel pump packed in
(half way round a french track in Abbeville)
Long story short - I had made sure I had cover before going (it was actually included already in my Red Star Classic Insurance)
Firstly, I was offered flights home but as we were a long way from any international airport (and had a fair bit of luggage etc)
we took a French rental to Calais, then they had pre paid ferry tickets ready for us at reception as walk on passengers - (as we had gone on the tunnel with Wedge)
and then british rental to get us home, and the Wedge followed on specialist transporters
within the next few weeks direct to my nominated garage.
Total cost to me to get home was just 49 Euros (and that was for the time the French garage
tried to fix the pump then gave up as they thought it was some TVR electrical fault)

Did this in a Chim back in 1998, and am thinking of doing the exact same thing late July with V8S, wife and two kids in tow. The Wedge will have had a lot of time in the garage being fettled, so should be raring to go (fingers crossed for the V8S).
The only difference is my wife hates ferries, so although we’re coming from the SW I am thinking Eurotunnel, but then pretty much the same route you’re suggesting. We will have to ‘stop off’ somewhere for a few days though, otherwise the kids will go stir crazy.
Wouldn’t mind comparing notes on route, hotels, etc., if you decide to do it.
