It occurred yesterday that I have added sugar with nothing (well you know what I mean) and therefore have about two litres of Aspartame sweetened liquid every day which can be from a big bottle of lemonade to a couple of litres of slimline/sugar free tonic which is my standard mixer.
Thats 14+ litres of Aspartame laden drinks a week and that is pretty much without fail every day for the last two years (when I had a big shift to zero sugar)
A quick Google for Aspartame has the usual "its vile and will kill you" to "its perfectly safe and we should embrace it" with little in between. So here is the question - has anyone on PH any first hand experience of the cumulative effects of it and could I make myself a happier person by binning it?
The only reason I considered it is that going from being laid back I now have the absolutely shortest temper in the world and I wonder if Aspartame could be a contributory factor? I appreciate I may just looking for a scapegoat and MTFU and chill out - but I would be interested to hear real life experiences?

Seems like a lot to me, but then I actively try and avoid artifical sweetners as I simply don't like the taste, and think that sugar at least is vaguely natural, even if we shouldn't ingest such big quantities.

I was annoyed to find a big pot of pickled gherkins were sweetened entirely with saccharine the other night, just why?!

BTW you anger issues may be unrelated. I've had two kids and have gone from being extremely laid back to never having more irritated by life.

Me also, used to be so laid back. Now I want to hurt everyone I meet.

I'm very laid back and I drink a lot of diet coke. smile

I generally discount most of the stuff posted on the internet about it - I suspect the sugar industry is behind much of the scaremongering. They are a powerful group.

Sure, it's probably not that good for you, but it's certainly not as bad is it's made out to be.

In my case I think I saw negative effects when I had it in my diet, it's quite specific though. I'll try not to waffle on...

I've been getting Migraines regularly for the last 15 years or so. I mean 'proper' ones, not the calling in sick to work because I have a headache kind.

Never had anything that helped reduce them or get rid of them when they happened, so a good few years ago I started experimenting with my diet, gradually cutting things out one after the other. Someone I knew at the time said Aspartame made her Mum's MS worse (no idea if it actually did) so had a look at cutting it out myself.

The migraines decreased significantly in frequency and severity after cutting it out.

I now just think, if it's doing something to my brain, it can't be that good for you. Right?

Interesting answers - thanks all. I think a little experiment is in order so for a month I wont have products with it in it and see what effect / non effect is has. Hopefully that will give some indication as to its effect on me vs me just being an uptight wker...

I am a diabetic, so anything I drink tends to be sugar free. I am very laid back. I have so many other health issues I am not worried if the sweetener is bad for me
