Simply was caught behind a hearse today on a country lane. It was doing about 20-30 in a NSL. I was a couple of cars back so couldn't safely overtake and didn't. If I was directly behind it I mIght have tried. It did have a coffin in the back but wasn't in a presesion. I was a bit late for a meeting.

I would think it's a bit rude doing so to be honest. But I remember being stuck behind one once which turned my 15 min journey into a much longer crawl so much that I felt like joining the deceased.

Had similar with blue light ambulances on dual carriageways doing approx 70 in lane 1. Again bit rude but perfectly safe and not holding them up.

Am I alone or would others not have given an overtake second thought?

If it's safe, I'd overtake.

Saying that, though, I'd be mighty embarrassed if my last journey on this Earth was at 20-30 mph in an NSL wink

I have in my younger less patient days overtaken an ambulance with flashy lights on - figured I'd caught it so might as well, somehow I'd still feel more guilty overtaking a hearse and would probably wait.

Now I'm a bit more grown up I wouldn't overtake anything with flashy blue lights, beyond the hearse everything else is fair game.

I wouldn't overtake something with blues and twos going. There's always that chance that you find yourself at the incident they are attending and possibly having to move out their way as you, and the other vehicles, end up blocking their route

It would be a little rude if it was an erratic overtake with a bean can exhaust blaring and requiring multiple gearchanges to make the manoeuvre stick.

If a swift burst of power was sufficient to enable you to waft past it would be more acceptable but still not really necessary (unless of course it was smile)

Stuck behind a fire engine doing 50 on an A-road once with blue lights on. laugh

Figured as soon as I caught another car I'd have to let him pass again so waited. And we didn't catch another car for miles.

When I was younger I did some occasional work as a carriage master for a funeral director.

We were happy for people to overtake the cortège, we didn't want to inconvenience anyone, all we wanted was for anyone overtaking to do it cleanly, not jump in and out making everyone brake.

on my old bike I started overtaking a queue of cars, doing about 20-30 in a NSL, when I got close to the front I saw the hearse, felt a little bad, but decided the damage was done, so gave it the beans and got out of their. It probably did not help the bike had a nice and fruity exhaust.

I have made my wife promise that any funeral procession will be taken at the minimum of the speed limits, I do not want to be holding anyone up.

Exactly. If you overtake an undertaker you'll cancel each other out and fall off the edge of time.

Was going on a run to Goodwood with my Father and as friend. They were on bikes, me the Caterham.

After leaving Petersfield all was going well, the bikes over took a group of cars which left me behind a little.
I quickly overtook the 2 or 3 cars and slid into a nice gap. It was only when I was along side the 2 or 3 cars did I notice that the gap was between them the procession and the funeral hearse. I had no option but to pop into it. I popped out and round asap to get away from my shame!

The bike riders are an anonymous mode of transport with thrir helmets. My face of shame was on full view!

The Petersfield to Goodwood route is a popular joining road, I can't have been the only one!

Also on the same road, my brother driving in one car, my parents in the other. We over took a lone hearse on it's way to Chichester crematorium also, but I knew the inhabitants and we were late!

I'm pretty pragmatic about death, and I honestly couldn't care less how my relatives choose to dispose of my remains - I've told them just to save their money and stick me in the bin.

I only have one request for my funeral, and all my family are aware of this simple request. The hearse taking me on my last journey must not be driven slowly. In fact, my instructions are for the hearse driver to give it the beans as much as is safely possible, and to try to lose the rest of the convoy before arriving at the crem!

True dat.

Nor blues and twos as you may be another car for them to pass later.
This 100%.

Respect & common sense, in that order.

Sure I read somewhere that "the dead drive fast..." wink

Can't see a problem with overtaking a single hearse irrespective of the 'occupant/s' but to overtake a funeral cortege filled with grieving relatives is frankly poor form IMO.

Your meeting might be oh-so-important but some things in life (and death) are more important than you - hang back and show some respect.

Emergency vehicles showing blues and/or twos might just know more than you about what's around that next bend in the road, so it's a bit foolish to overtake them.

Police cars at high speeds. That never seems to work well...
