Lack of enforcement is due to lack of Traffic (police) officers.

It's still illegal, it's just that no one has invented a camera to enforce it yet. It's just a case of having enough officers to enforce it. Those there are will probably be looking to things they see as a greater priority to deal with should they notice someone nip into the outside lane with a trailer occasionally.

The law isn't lane 3, it's the outside lane of 3 or more.

I'm sure we have debated before, but I'm still unsure why the outside lane of 3 or more is a bad place for a trailer to be.

But you never need to go there as you can just pass in the nice and clear lane 1 most of the time!

Trailers not allowed in outside lane but centre lane owners going slowly look in the mirror and can't see the trailer so don't move over to let you pass, you know the mindset, go pass me then in the outside lane if you want to.
Basically it is often a knock on effect from other road users not using the roads correctly regarding lane discipline.
It is frustrating when you are limited to 60 and someone else is preventing you from making progress when all they need to do is move over now and again.

Normally the ones I see in the outside lane are doing 70+

Current temporary signage on the M1 Southbound between J32 and J31 through the roadworks appears to suggest 'Any Vehicle' in all four available lanes, along with 'Stay in Lane'. I've yet to see a HGV in the 4th lane yet though.

But is that actually the reason for the law? I can quite happily overtake 50mph MLMs at 60 in lane 3 with the trailer on the back.

But (hypothetically), I'd just go past them in L1.

A good 4 wheeled trailer with brakes is perfectly stable at high speeds but you do need to allow a bigger gap in case of the unexpected, As above you may have to use the inside quite often due to the middle lane morons who refuse to move back into L1.

On another point It always amazes that I find myself out accelerating most people out of roundabouts even with the trailer attached. If I was in my car and got out accelerated by a trailer aid be asking myself how did that just happen?!

No idea if it is the reason, I just thought that there was some logic for not allowing vehicles that should only be doing 60 into the outside lane.

I agree that there are plenty doing 70+ smile

My brother-in-law moved (his car and caravan combination) into Lane 3 of a 3-lane motorway specifically to ease the progress (i.e. get out of the way) of a Police car joining the motorway.

Result: pulled over, fine and three points.

Go on explain that and why he had to move to lane 3 for someone joining from a slip road I to Lane 1.
