Reg transfer from existing car to new car or not

A simple question but with several possible outcomes
What's the most effective solution for this set of circumstances

I brought a new mini in July 2005
To this car a personal reg was assigned from new, it has no previous life

In 2006 i purchased another reg which has been on retention ever since


My 05 has done it's stint and it's time for a change,
Trouble is it's my daily ride and will not be part exed due to silly valuation
I cannot sell with personal reg

So with insurance to be considered as well ...

I need to collect a new car at some stage
and for a number of days possibly weeks I need to have a couple of minis insured both with same reg ?

Or simple solution would be to use spare reg in the the draw,
But then will I be paying double to assign new reg and then move the 05 one back to a certificate

Am I over thinking this?

Your 05 car will be issued with an 05 plate by the DVLA when you transfer your plate off, no need for you to put another plate on it (if that is what you mean). Two cars can't both have the same plate.
