I've bought a private plate directly from DVLA, had the form back, and sent it back with my V5 and MOT certificate.

Today I have received back the amended MOT certificate showing the new reg, but no V5. At what point can I physically screw the new plates onto the car? I could do with doing it this weekend as I have airport parking booked next week under the new plate.

I assume there is some kind of "grace period" and the BIB/ANPR/DVLA would presumably be able to link the old and new reg anyway as clearly the docs have been received and it's "in the system". I get that to the letter of the law you might technically need the V5 in your hand, however looking at it the other way if the DVLA sent the new V5, and you didn't get it for a few days and were working away, complete with car for that week, you are presumably then displaying the "wrong" old plate?

Can any of our BIB friends help me out?

Not BIB, but my approach would be to check the DVLA portal to see if they've associated the plate with the car yet.

Thanks for the tip. Neither plate shows, however there is a contact number for the DVLA and they've said it was fine. TBH I went on another bit of the DVLA website and it had said they aren't open in Saturdays, where clearly they are.

Plates on then! thumbup

Last time I did this - June 2014 I got the new MOT certificate/tax disc and the letter of authority with it so you can get the plates made up. V5 came few days later. The dealer had already made the new plates for me so put them on the car same day. Make sure insurance is on the new reg!! Job done! ANPR etc may take a while to catch up so just carry relevant docs with you for few days until you see details change over on Government website. Shouldn't be a problem

You won't be able to buy plates until you have the V5 or a letter of authorisation.

You will, just not from a supplier that follows the law.

Or already had them made before sending the paperwork off.

yes Form V948

Mine came with an accompanying note to say that I should put the new plates on as soon as they were made up.
The V5C would take longer to be printed and sent out and it could be up to a couple of weeks before I received it.

If they have the makers details and the correct BS number on then then they are breaking the law big time if they saw no docs.

Depends on if you think people being able to obtain cloned/faked plates easily is a good thing or not, I s'pose.

It's an example of a poorly thought out law. It puts additional hassle on law abiding people but anyone can get show plates made up from a number of companies through the post.

There should be a law against it!

Oh, wait. There is.

Breaking the law should be made illegal!
