Hello,

Long term lurker but this my first post.

Recently on local-ish radio ive heard quite a few Audi adverts which I feel are in poor taste...

There has been;
'new year, new car', 'impress your neighbour with a new audi' and 'get ready for the new rs3 sportback' (a car which will cost easily 40k).

It might be me being pedantic but do you believe this one one-upmanship/overly excessive focus on any excuse to buy a new car is a bit off putting and alienating to customers? Its not as extreme as the 'give a Lexus for xmas' ad campaign in america but its really not the most sensitive approach nor currently warms me to brand Audi.

Thoughts?

I think a fair percentage of the idiots out there will fall for it.

My neighbor is a massive car fan so if I rocked up with a RS3 he would be very impressed/jealous so I think its hit the nail on the head. It's got you talking about it so from their point of view the advert has done it's job i guess.

Give Audi credit, they know how to appeal to their demographic!

How could 'get ready for the new rs3 sportback' get your back up?

Maybe SonicHedgeHog should consider one?

Suspect these adverts may be from the local dealerships rather than Audi UK.

Or "new year, new car" for that matter?

A lot of people change their car in the new year.

True though. They've made the brand highly desirable, the actual product seems almost irrelevant to many people. Fair play to them for that, so advertising it in those terms is just carrying on in the same vein.

Personally, it puts me off, but I seem to be in the minority.

I find that the majority of joe public do believe this marketing twaddle.

A local Audi dealer posts up photos of people picking up their latest car and most of them don't look the full shilling

There was a saddo salesman somewhere I used to work who was criticising how wk my car and another colleagues were compared to his new Audi A4. He was going on about it being the peak of modern design compared to those old sheds, la la la. My car was a Jaguar X300 XJ12 and the other one was an Alfa GTV V6. His car was white and looked for all the world like an upside down bathtub on wheels. Only marketing could possibly have made him think that a featureless A4 was better looking that two of the best looking cars of the last 25 years.

People buying a new car which will impress the neighbours, the in-laws, colleagues etc.
pretty sure this is how the majority of manufactures get a fair chunk of their sales, a certainly one of the ways they get people to opt for the slightly higher models.
Not quite on the level of that guy on the whining about people leasing golf Rs thread, but it has a factor in probably the majority of sales.
Ironic really that audi a brand that used to claim be more about substance over style is now it's self all about image, may well be alienating some of the old customers, but why do they give a st if they're getting twice as many new and less discerning customers.

I've been a fan of Audi since the bad old days, and have seen them go from being the thinking mans choice to the aspirational brand that it is today, and say fair play to them for changing their demographic, becoming a household name and making VAG a ton of money.

This old ad is still a classic though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIQ-283wKgg

Why are you surprised that car marketing follows the same format as virtually all other marketing in the world and persuades us we'll have a better lifestyle/be more happy/feel better/be seen different by others if we purchase a certain product?

There was also one recently saying their 4wd system meant you never had to be concerned about the weather.

The tdi brigade already think they're super heroes so add this and it's going to get even better in snow and ice.

Irresponsible I think. They must be aware that their clientele are media victims who go by blurb and not reality.

I have heard an audi ad on radio recently and I was sure right until the end that it was actually an Aldi advert, thats what they seemed to be saying anyway.

Yep! and for the number of Audi's into the barriers last night because of just a little bit of snow, it obviously doesn't work!
