In South Africa, police are now confiscating speeder's cars! I might be able to understand this position if a speeding driver actually killed or injured someone, but this is plain ridiculous IMHO.

I understand this is techincally possible using laws recently introduced to confiscate cars used in carrying out unsociable acts etc. These laws were brought in to try and stop people joy riding around residential areas, making a nuisance with loud stereos etc, although how long before some poor sod with a nice car gets it confiscated for making progress on an empty motorway.

I have seen a car pulled at a ANPR site that was clamped in the layby next to the van.

I hear it's not uncommon - not for speeding of course, but it's a precedent.

Like has been pointed out...under the POlice reform act 2002, cars can be seized on the second occasion where they have been used to the annoyance of other road users or driving without due care and attention..

I've known several top notch cars be seized in my force, since Xmas alone.

Oh I do hope so.

Actually I do wonder how much more of this sort of thing the motoring community will put up with before more people start behaving like real criminals as a reaction to it.

Tell me about it. I have this burning itch to go out one night and remove every single unnecessary roadsign in my area. I mean, on an arrow-straight piece of road, do you really need 2 warning triangles about an approaching bend, when you have the world's biggest black/white chevrons at the bottom that you couldn't miss?

Can you tell us what the drivers were doing and what were they charged with?

Another query is what happens if the car is on finance or doesn't actually belong to the driver?
