MK3 VW Golf 1.9 Diesel engine start issues!!
Discussion
Hi everyone,
I am in desperate need of help as my car has once again decided to pack in. I have a MK3 VW Golf 1.9 Diesel (Not TDI) I have had all issues from the wrong battery being installed when I first bought it all the way to the glow plugs dieing. Below is a run down of what I have done recently to "fix" my car and get it going.
I have had to bypass the glow plug relay because it just would not work (replaced the relay 3 times) I have done this by installing a push to start button that is wiring my BRAND NEW (all four) glow plugs directly to the battery, I found just tapping the push to start would get my glow plug relay working again? so for two months now I have had to get in my car tap the push to start then turn engine on and the glow plug relay would work fine, however recently it went back to flashing and clicking while driving and no longer works at all.
All fuses are in good working order and I have re-wired my push to start. The relay will still not work and even when holding down the push to start for 5 seconds it don't work. Any help would be amazing because I rely on this this car so much and have no money left so cant afford to scrap it.
Thank in advance,
Jamie

Am I correct in thinking that you have fitted and wired a push button inside your vehicle?
If you have fitted a push button - What confuses me is that you mention that you have bypassed the glow plug relay, later you mention that you tap the button and the relay works.
If you bypassed the relay how does it work when you tap the button?
Do you understand how confusing your post is?
Below I post the best solution for your problem and it is a very cheap fix
1) Fit a push button inside your vehicle (You may have already done that)
2) Remove the original glow plug relay from under the bonnet
3) Purchase an inertia starter motor solenoid, the best way of getting the correct solenoid is to mention you want one that mounts on the inner wing just like the old Austin Mini one does, the solenoid is only small and has two large threaded copper terminals and one spade connector
4) Mount the solenoid near to where the glow plug relay was originaly fitted and make sure that it has a good connection from its body to the body of your vehicle, if you have purchased the correct solenoid it will need this good earth connection to function correctly
5) Wire all four glow plugs to one of the large threaded solenoid terminals (Use heavy wire for these glow plug supply wires) (The large threaded terminals are the contacts that will be joined together when the solenoid is operated)
6) Wire the other threaded solenoid terminal to the battery (Use heavy wire for this glow plug supply wire)
7) Wire an ignition supply to one terminal of the push button inside the vehicle (It is best to use a heavy ignition wire at the fuse box or ignition switch and it is also good practice to fit a 30 Amp blade fuse in that wire)
8) Wire the other terminal of the push button to the spade terminal on the solenoid that you have fitted under the bonnet
I will now simplify things a bit more with an explanation of what you will have achieved (Should you understand my above instructions - please ignore the following)
By wiring a button that when pressed will operate a solenoid you are then connecting the battery positive terminal to the glow plugs through the heavy threaded solenoid contact terminals, by holding the button for a given time the glow plugs will heat up and aid starting the engine
It is for you to calculate how long the button needs pushing for but I feel that 20 seconds will be a good starting point for testing it out
If you need any help or are unsure of anything please do not hesitate to post back here
Cheers. Doctor Volt
First i would have checked the GP relay was getting an ign live, golfs and polos are notorious for ign switch issues and dropping lives to certan circuits in the vehical (fuse box issues ).
When you say you wired the GPs directly to the battery i take it you meen through the switch with no relay ? if so the switch is now burnt out and fooked, that's what the big old H/D GP relay is there for.
Personly i would get somone who knows what they are doing to look at it before you fook it up any further, sorry but you obv know a little about vehicals and that is just enough to make matters worse, please try not to be offended but i get this all the time and repairing failed bodges takes longer than just fixing the issue in the first place.
IF you have wired the GPs through the switch direct and it melts to the point of shorting out you could well end up setting fire to the dash and the whole vehical, the GP have a huge current draw with thick wiring that will take long enough to burn through that the heat given off will set alight to surrouning meterials !
The Dr's fix is an easyer fix than doing it propperly and better than you have tried so far but my advice stands i'm affraid, a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

This is what confused me because I disconnected the wiring to the glow plugs itself... anyway I will take your advice and give it a go asap. Am I correct in thinking that you have fitted and wired a push button inside your vehicle?

I understand where you're coming from with the little knowledge expression, I am a computer expert and it is exactly the same in my field haha. I did get all this work done by a mechanic (a friend) and just helped him out, then just reverse engineered what he did to replace any wiring he installed. I genuinely think with the state he done the wiring that he is a bodge job type of guy now mind.
