Any advice gratefully received chaps.

My girlfriend is moving from Belfast to London and bringing her car over on the boat. She claims she has seen info that says she needs to re-register it and get new plates. I am adamant this is nonsense as it has UK plates and will be fine.

Can anyone set her mind at rest?

cheers

well indeed. That's what I said. She seems to be worried that if the car moves here permenantly it needs to be reregistered. (NI plates do have a different format to mainland )

DVLNI is different to DVLA. She can keep the old number when she registers it here.

Lots of NI plates in NI, it is a well known cheapskate way to get a non dated plate.

I'm from NI and lived in Scotland for 4 years. There are lots of cars over in NI that are on UK plates and plenty of NI plates over there too. It doesn't make a difference and you don't need to re-register.

Maybe the confusion is coming from the Republic of Ireland. You would need to import a car if buying from there, but not Northern Ireland.

ETA from the NI Direct website:

"You no longer need to re-register a vehicle if it is moved from Northern Ireland to England, Scotland or Wales, or from mainland GB to Northern Ireland. Simply follow the instructions to change the address on the registration certificate (V5C)"

Also, all registrations/tax etc for NI cars are now processed by DVLA Swansea.
