The only one of those that isn't utter dross is the BMW 525 or 530.

I'd certainly not pay very much at all for an Audi A4 over a VW Passat/Skoda Octavia

A quick look at Autotrader for any interesting £10k petrol estates shows tiny numbers for sale. 1 Alfa 159, for example, no Mondeo or S-Max with more than an NA 2.0 or 1.6 turbo etc.

Given the lack of choice on the market, and the number of Audis on your shortlist I would ask if you have considered an A6 Avant.

I think it's a much better car than the A4, similar age and mileage for similar money, probably more equipment. If you search Autotrader for petrol cars between £8k and £12 don't get distracted by the 4.2V8 Quattro... (which interestingly is way cheaper to tax than the newer 3.0 diesels :-) )

Yes. Utterly forgettable cars that drive in an utterly forgettable way powered by a bland engine that is acceptable in an appliance type car but otherwise utterly forgettable too. The straight six in the 525i or 530i is lovely, and a sorted 5 series is an absolute pleasure to drive compared to a cooking Audi A4/A5/A6. Honestly you need to drive them. I'm no fanboy of BMW but every time I drive one back to back with the equivalent A4 or A6 I am left totally confounded as to why anyone would buy the Audi, and that difference is even more pronounced if you're comparing that boring 1.8T engine with any straight 6 BMW engine.

A collegue of mine spent £10,000 about 3 years ago on a 56 plate 525i. It had done 100,000 miles and looked quite smart, but it is an utter nail. It looks the part, but if you can' find something considerably better than that for the same money I'd be very surprised.

I'd probably go for the A5 as I'd imagine the others to be feeling more worn out. However it really depends what the requirements and motivation behind the purchase is smile

Practicality, but don't really use the boot that much. know the rear seats in the a5 are tiny tho
