Yes yes, another what car thread, sorry to disappoint here guys.

It's looking very likely my job situation is going to change in the next few weeks so I will be having to commute 50 miles to another place of work, with the likelihood I won't get a company car.

Therefore I am looking for something cheap to buy, yet have all the toys (I want the earth don't I!), after seeing a few Barge threads it's something nicely sized I'd like to buy to waft around in, with plenty of comfort.

My main criteria's are.

Diesel - 100 mile round trip a day
Heated Leather - Keeps my tushy nice & warm
Cruise Control - Perfect for nice lazy drive as it'll mostly be A38 or the M1.
Automatic - Would be nice, so it is a really lazy drive for me.

Now comes the difficult part, I don't really want to be spending anything more than £1k - £1,500, probably risky trusting a lower priced vehicle to be my servant for the commute, but need to keep costs down as looking at getting onto the house market soon, so would only need to last me 12-18 months.

I've had a few cars come into mind, Rover 75 Connoiseur, Skoda Superb Elegance & Saab 9-5's, but was pretty much stumped as to what else would be out there with that spec for me.

What would you guys plump for or suggest for that kind of money?

My old Saab 93 would've fitted the bill. Maybe an old Volvo? V40s or an older S60

I've had a look at some Volvo's not really considered the Passat, didnt think they would have the spec I wanted.

Any other suggestions?

I'd be looking at a 75/ZT (they come with Bimmer engines)

If you can deal without the "luxury" aspect, one of Skoda's offering will fit the bill, plus the PD engines are lovely.

I live literally on the crux of A38/M1 junction!

How about an Octavia Laurin + Klement? They're pretty luxurious inside.
Early Superb might also be in budget.

Vauxhall omega. Early diesels were 6cyl bow. Don't really handle, but are lovely and comfy on a cruise.

Saab has to be in with a good shout.

My dad recently bought a 9-5 with 105k on the clock for a grand. Spent another 5-600 sorting out some bits and it's been faultless really.

He's averaged around 2400 miles per month the last 10 weeks so it's seen some action too.

My suggestion, too. The 2.5 in the early Omega was a BMW unit, too.

Here's a proper luxury motor:

Automatic- Yes
Cruise Control- Yes
Full Leather Interior- Yes
Heated Seats- Yes
Bullet proof drive train as long as it's been looked after, but you will have to check for rust.
No Cambelt & Water Pump changes to worry about.

Or if you really want an MG, good car with the BMW engine.

Take that Merc. Really nice cars and a very easy drive. Check for rust obviously but mechanically they are pretty solid.

I did a similar commute for 4 years. J22 m1 to j30 m1. Guy I worked with did a38 (Denby) to j30 m1 each day.

I did it in an Octavia (loved it) and then a Mazda 6 (don't bother).

He did it in a leon

Both the vag products were te PD engined tdi's. I was slightly more comfortable than he. Both of is stuck stellar miles on for work, both of us ended up with 200k plus on the clock. Both are still soldiering on. Well, mine isn't, I wrote it off. hehe
