Rick Stein - Winchester

Anyone been? Booked myself and the wife in next week for her birthday. Looking at the menu it seems to sit in-between the Seafood Restaurant and The Cornish Arms for dish style and price.

Let us know how it goes ! We dropped in last week on the off-chance but it was fully booked. Ended up at Loch Fyne instead

It was ace. Really nice atmosphere, the food was well up to Stein par and the service really excellent. Went for Mussels followed by half a grilled lobster all washed down with a Doombar. Smashing.

How does it compare to Loch Fyne? My wife and I are both fans of LF, Rick Steins worth the (little bit) extra?

I've not been to a LF in years but from memory I would say quite a lot better. The quality of the produce was what really shone through. Have you tried The Crab at Cheivley?

No, bit far out of our way for getting a babysitter that one!

To be fair, I have found Loch Fynes to be variable. The one in Portsmouth was crap, the one in Wokingham was alright, and the one in Winchester has been excellent every time we've been there. To the point where for my last birthday I actually chose it over The Porterhouse, despite being a confirmed carnivore.

I find LF a bit binary. If you get a good one, they're great, but I've also been to a few that are crap wit bad service.

Feedback:

Restaurant was packed but service was excellent and tables were not too close to one another. Food was outstanding. I had a selection of sashimi as a starter, followed by an Indonesian seafood curry. Both were very enjoyable, the sashimi being of particularly good quality.

It was possibly the best restaurant outing I've been to in quite some time. Will definitely be going back. I certainly would recommend it.



On another note, I went to Barbecoa on Wed night and it was poor.

Thanks for the feedback. I thought the missus would book there last week for my birthday but she took me to Lainston House instead. That was pretty special ( particularly as they added my favourite meal to the menu ! ) . Hopefully we'll get to Stein's soon.
