RE: Monte Carlo shakedown: Time for Tea?
Wednesday 21st January 2015

Late January means the World Rally Championship is about to kick off, with the Monte Carlo rally starting tomorrow. Ordinarily this would be an excuse for us to have a good rummage through the YouTube vault to find some classic action from the Good Old Days. When men were men, sideburns were bushy, and you could get a static shock from standing within six feet of a nylon rally jacket.
Monte Carlo shakedown: Time for Tea?
Robert Kubica gets the World Rally Championship off to a spectacular start

But then we found this: some truly spectacular video of Robert Kubica putting his Fiesta WRC through its paces at the official test a couple of days ago. For all the criticism that's sometimes levelled at modern rally cars, there's no doubting they are seriously good at what they do. And you can't watch this without having full respect for both the ex-F1 driver's fully nailed commitment and the ability of the Fiesta's suspension to shrug off spectacular high-speed abuse as chunks are gouged out of the skidplates.
It just pipped another video from the test that we'd advise you to check out if you've got time - Francois Delecour's shakedown of the Tuthill prepped Porsche 911 R-GT. Watch it if you get the chance. Fingers crossed for a good year of rallying.
Watch Kubica here.
Discussion
I'd like to think that I'd love to have a PAX ride at that speed but the reality is I have too great a sense of risk perception / self preservation / corwardess. Bloody hell that's quick - it looks quick and stuff on TV is always looks much slower than it is in reality.

That is just brutal.
I really like the guy's driving style - I'd love to see him rinse it in the next few years.
How come the brake lights are on solidly for the first half of the clip and then not at all in the second half - are they in Steve McQueen mode? Or are they actually not brake lights?

Who is the nutter on the verge at 19seconds not watching the car as it's bouncing almost out of control?! Good way to get gathered up in an accident I would suggest.
Nutter? The word you're looking for is "man". They used to exist about 20 or 30 years ago, before health and safety eradicated them. Now we're left with us - prissy little girls unable to change a tyre because it's raining. Some speed he's doing, fantastic.

One can only assume he's left-foot braking, as judging by the engine note the throttle is absolutely pinned. Not a lift. Quite how he manages to get both feet together on the pedals with such ginormous spuds between his legs is beyond me!PunterCam said:

Much of my main admiration for rally drivers comes from doing what they do despite being surrounded by these tools, who are quite clearly more closely related to lemmings than any other creature (yes, I know about Lemmings and Disney but stick with the idea anyway!)
"Hey there's really fast cars here, let's get CLOSER because - what could possibly happen?"
I also assume this car is the same thing Rossi was hooning around in - never thought I'd say "that's a nice looking Fiesta" but there you go...

I sense chavs in garages already hacking-away the back corners of their bonnets...
