Brake Pads Low warning
Discussion
Hi,
I've just received the 'Warning Front Brake Pads Low' message on my DBS this morning, however, it stayed on for a few miles, with an accompanying red brake warning light on the dash, then it just went off again!?
Has anybody seen this happen, where the warning appears and then disappears?
I do a lot of motorway driving (95% of the total) so I'd be surprised if the pads needed changing just yet - I was told that they've been changed once since new at 30,000km, and I'm now on 51,000km - any ideas how long these things should last with mainly motorway driving?
The other question is, if they are low, and the message reappears, it'll be a week or two before I can get it into the AM service centre, as it's quite far away, so has anybody got any idea at which point this warning is usually engaged? What's usually left on the pads at this stage, and do you think it will be OK to carry on using it until I can get them changed?
Thanks in advance,
Scott.

Morning Scott,
I can't answer why it has come on and gone off but I may know why it has come on so soon.
This happened to me so off I trotted to my favourite Indy having ordered the pads. On inspection the technician told me the pads were fine. What had happened at the previous service (AM main dealer) is that they had not reconnected the sensor wire correctly which had rubbed through causing the light to come on, false alarm. For this reason I now only use an Indy.
I'm sure a decent technician can tell pad wear just by looking at them in situ.
Hope this helps.
Nick

Why not just give the front pads a visual inspection (rather than just relying on the warning light)?
I had the front pad warning come on for my V8V when we were at Snetterton. It comes on intermittently at first (as the circuit is made once the connector starts to wear through). However, a visual check of the brake pads showed me that I still had a couple of mms of wear left. ie plenty of time to get them changed.

Thanks for your reply Nick!
That's interesting, as I've recently (in the last month) had the tyre pressure monitor system replaced, at the AM Service Centre, so I'm wondering if they inadvertently messed anything up during that process?!
They also serviced it about three months ago, so I might ask them how much wear they had at that point, and see if they were even close to needing replacement.
