Club riders - recording ride attendance

Possibly applicable to any type of club that records attendance and activities, does anyone have experience with an app or similar that can be used to record who turns up for a club ride or event so we can track participation?
We used to just take a note of who turned up and which ride they went on, but with potentially 5 or 6 different ride grades going off on a Sunday morning and over 300 active club members it was getting messy trying to collate emails and spreadsheets.
One thought was a barcode on the club membership card and use an app to record, feeding back into a db.
