Hi All,

I'm about to change jobs and, as such, will be losing my company car - being stuck in a eurobox for the last few years has taken it's toll and I'm really looking forward to getting back into private ownership.

I'll be doing about 10k/year, mainly trunk roads and I'd like a bit of luxury. I've got up to £7k and I need something reliable - I don't mind maintenance, but I need it to reliably get me to work and back.

My criteria are;
Over 20mpg
Saloon, Estate or 4-Seat Coupe
Comfortable, with some creature comforts like good seats
Reliable
Under £7k
Anything a bit left-field will score extra points.

So far, I can't think of anything better than a VW Phaeton (wonder what that says about me!!). Does anyone have anything else I might be able to consider?

Thanks in advance!

That Citroen certainly scores points for being left-field!! What about Bork though?

The Jags don't really do it for me (memories of broken S-Types throughout my childhood!) and the Lexii leave me numb.

How about a Mercedes S Class? Not sure of the designation, but 1999-2005 model.

Lack of numbness was not specified in your criteria wink

The important bit is highlighted in bold.
Many options presented will probably have wallet weeping worries to consider during your ownership.

The big Merc posted above may be worth a punt though.

Lower your budget and stick 5.5K in the war chest

Not mine obviously

But an E38 in V8 flavour would tick all your boxes

In a similar dilemma recently, I handed back the keys to the company E-Class and bought an E39 M5. It's within budget, but you'll need a fat maintenance budget.

Every time I drive it I arrive with a huge grin on my face smile

Many company car policies will insist that to claim the car allowance you'll need a car under a certain age and with CO2 limitations, so watch for that.

Subaru Legacy Spec B with the 3.0 flat 6 and manual box. I was exactly in the same position as you 18 months ago and that's what I purchased.

What about a W211 E500?

As far as I can see, the only bork item is the Vario radiator.
