A few people in recent months were in the process of/considering dropping a Chevy V8 into a Chimaera. The impression was that this would give excellent bhp for you bucks and be reliable.
Has anyone completed the project yet and what are the costs? Also, what are the other mods needed (ie upgrades on suspension, transmission, brakes etc)?
It all sounded very tempting if one had an accurate idea of overall cost.

It's not as simple as at first appears but it has been done. Crate engines aren't complete or entirely suitable as supplied and then there are a fair few fitment issues and transmission costs etc. There may well be ecu changes depending on your final intentions. A bespoke engine and install by me would cost under £10k but that wouldn't include a new gearbox or brakes etc. It gives you a ball park to play with though and a few corners could be cut

Why not just buy a cerby?

Its already got at least 350bhp, racing brakes, longer lest twitchy chassis and a roll cage built in as standard.

Cerbs are nice and unique. Chims are cheaper though and an lsx engine can produce 320 lbs ft/tq at 2100 rpm and go to 400 lbs ft. Then you can tune it if you like. They have plenty of scope for more.

Many people will like the idea of still having a convertible with these or greater power number. Brakes is and easy swap, as is a cage, an engine less so but not a huge obstacle is you want this type of beast. I do, and will have Very Soon..... More reliable more power (similar if LS1 more if LS6/2) and more torque.

Runs over 200mph on the salt flats too!!!

I know where my spare pocket money is going. I'm starting to save now. I thinkthere will be alot more experience of these conversions over the next year or so. It seems almost like the natural step to take.
Out of interest, how long does a conversion take?

This has to depend on engine build specs, custom or stock and also of importance is the choice of ecu and whether it's already mapped or mappable (needs mapping on an engine dyno). Then there are fabrication issues and gearbox options. So, I'd expect 12 weeks/appx for a custom install and less for a crate engine.

It depends on how much else you want done too. Considering some of the threads on here about rusty chassis and suspension, it would be wise to take to body off and have everything properly cleaned and powder coated at the same time. It will cost more, but you'll have even more peace of mind as a result

It's certainly worth taking the body off once the engine's out, once you get over the "its to hard bit",it's pretty straight forward.

6 weeks is what I am aiming at. Cerb in a Griff - yes but alot of this is to get big power but without any inherent (possible) unreliablity issues.

Don't forget if you're going for 'proper' power (one advantage of an LS1 or SBC) you'll have to upgrade the transmission.

My new Tremec TKO600 (rated to 600ft/lb) arrived from the States last week, together with a very nice multi-plate McLeod race clutch (rated to 700ft/lb), hydraulic release, spider flywheel, scatter sheild etc

Although having now seen the size of the TKO600 and scatted sheild I'm not quite sure how its going to fit in the chassis.
