how does car a non motoring offence effect car insurance

Loads of general insurers will immediately refuse to quote if you have a non-motoring conviction. This is on the basis that you have been "proven to be dishonest" and may try to scam them.
Seems harsh. Surely the only solution would be to prove them right and not disclose the conviction.vikingaero said:

Wouldn't it be dishonest to not tell them? How does having a conviction make you dishonest?
Your "friend" probably needs to have the conversation with the insurer rather than a computer (comparison sites not keyboard experts!) my "friend" had a conviction for possession of a smallish amount of cannabis, the insurer didn't see it as a problem but said if it was theft or fraud then that's a big no no. HTH
What did your friend do (I notice from another thread in SPL that he has community service)?
If it's an offence featuring dishonesty it perhaps be expected to affect insurance premiums and availability. It might be that he's best talking to insurers directly instead of comparison sites.

I'd imagine someone convicted with say fraud might make you dishonest. Although to be fair, how would they know? I'm assuming they don't have assess to police records so would need to do a paid background check. I've had accidents, although nothing ever serious, but never been asked to confirm if I had any convictions.

Must be dependant upon the crime surely?
Yeah, you're right; like I clarified, it just amused me when taken at face value. No offence implied or taken I hope. Must be dependant upon the crime surely?
I'm amazed it makes that much difference, it's not something I'd have ever thought of.

How frustrating for those who have repaid to society, to be judged again and again. Once you've done your time, why can't it be put behind you? Surely the insurance companies being awkward means more chance of reoffending and or claims?
Don't they ask about unspent convictions, IE those that are not yet considered to be fully repaid? I'm a great believer in the need for reform in the penal system, so I'm not saying it's right, but it is not unreasonable as it is.moffat said:
2) Have you ever been refused insurance or had a policy cancelled - which they ask
Interestingly, does this cover all insurance, not just motor?I ask because I'm Type 1 diabetic and tried to get life insurance before but was declined for it because of my condition.
Would I have to disclose this to a potential motor insurer? Seems a little unfair if so...

The wording is usually "insurance refused or cancelled", which is different to having a quote declined. Insurance is refused or cancelled if you've been naughty and messing about; a declined quote is an everyday thing and not an issue.
Insurers are looking for 'moral hazard', i.e. dodgy, untrustworthy people, so that applies to household, business, or any other type of insurance.
