Quite unusual to get faulty calipers on BM's in my experience. They make the slides (which are the normal culprits) out of stainless steel, and this makes them pretty robust. I'd defo confirm the caliper is bad before putting a used one on there.
Just my point of view.
Although in my old E46 318i other than noisy tappits the only problem I had was brake caliper, but as said get a 2nd opinion. My caliper just needed a stip dowb and cleaning. Just my point of view.
