Excellent article in the Sunday Times by Richard Curtis, who experienced the less severe effects of the tsunami in the Maldives whilst on holiday.
Anyway, he pointed out just how many people are dying from poverty in Africa, and seeing as everyone is feeling altruistic after the terrible events in Asia please take a look at www.makepovertyhistory.com .

I agree with the sentiment from RIchard Curtis precisely.
While the outpouring of grief and support for the tsunami victims is to be applauded, it is also somehow troubling.
After all, we care deeply about the loss of say 150,000 people from a tsunami, when the reality is that literally millions of people die EVERY YEAR from preventable illness.
Somehow, we allow the waste of life of millions to carry on every year even though we can do something about it. We can't do anything really about a natural disaster, and yet it is that over which we feel the most grief.

posted this in the 3 minute silence thread but repeating again ...
If it's 3 minutes for the people in Asian then let's have a 15 minutes silence for the malaria victims worldwide.
Somethings should be taken in perspective - Malaria kills about 3,000 a day (the majority of victims are children). That's >1 million a year.
The true scandal is the lack of dedicate research from pharmaceutical companies to developing a cure (seems that it's not a commerically viable disease ) or a serious insecticide programmes to eradicate the mosquito problem in the third world countries. Malaria is natural, but unlike tectonic plates, we can and should do something about it.
Big hand to The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for their sizeable donations to help eradicate Malaria.
