Interested in a car that is for sale but the guy who is selling it says his brother owns it and the V5 is also in his brother’s name and he lives abroad.

The guy selling the car has the V5

He sounds genuine on the phone and has good Ebay feedback so is it a case of just trusting him ?

I asked if has a letter from his brother with permission to sell etc but he says all he has is an Email string with them discussing selling the car etc.

To make things more complicated his brother has a different surname because he says his brother took their stepdad’s name.

Maybe I could get them to include me in the Email string so I can look back at their previous discussions etc ?

Any help appreciated, thanks

Unless it is some exotic rare beast, then I would suggest you avoid if you are in any doubt.

Sounds well dodgy to me! Not sure I'd go through with that one!

Emails can be forged more easily than almost anything. His "brother" (if he exists) should sell his own car. I wouldn't.

ETA - I could knock up a convincing forged e-mail trail with appropriate looking history etc in about the time it takes to type it. Not saying he is, but he could do.

Personally I'd find another car.

Is this particular car cheap as well ?

yes I'd avoid.

If I was the seller and that is the truth then I'd just transfer ownership. Increasing the number of owners on the V5 by one has got to be the lesser of two evils compared with being a private individual trying to sell a car not in their name when the guy in question lives abroad!
