Most people know that the hard shoulder is a dangerous place to be, more so if you attempt to repair something, so I was somewhat surprised when on the M3 this morning I saw someone changing a tyre in a live lane of the M3.

Bare in mind that the M3 is currently being converted to a smart motorway, so the westbound carriageway currently has three westbound lanes and one eastbound lane on it, there is no hard shoulder, his arse is actually in lane 1. He's less than fifty meters from the J4 exit (you can see the traffic cones marking the start of the slip road) which makes his decision to attempt a repair in a free recovery area even more shortsighted. Dumbest thing I seen on the motorway in some time.

Not very visible either (the person, not the car).

Probably indicating right as soon as he saw the obstruction, but then noticed a vehicle approaching on the right so realised he couldn't make the lane change.
I think you have to give the driver the benefit of the doubt when they're trying to avoid a human in the carriageway!

I would definitely say he did. What the complete and utter censored is wrong with him?

Only had to stop on the hard shoulder once and it was a horrible experience. Last time I had a puncture I was on the M2, loads of spray, decided to limp the car a couple of miles up to the Faversham turning to get out of the way rather than sit there. Wrecked the tyre but at the end of the day I'd rather pay £75 for a new tyre than get hit by some moron in a HGV.

Could that lorry driver have been mislead by the road markings and thought it was the beginning of a slip road?

Do you mean the solid white line he crossed before the dotted white line demarking the layby? Maybe...

Another theory would be he decided to "give that tt a fright" and got it spectacularly wrong.

Probably before getting in his truck by the look of it.

Changed a few tyres on the shoulder over the years. Why is it always the off side? If I'm with anyone, I have them watch the traffic the whole time. Not so easy when you're on your own but I still spend as much time as possible looking up the carriage way and never have my back to it. I make sure I'm not kneeling down either so if I do have to move quickly I can. There is worse though, try the hard shoulder on a deristricted autobahn.

I'm dead against these managed motorways tbh. The highways can't manage themselves let alone a motorway. The number of times I now drive the M25 at 40mph for an incident that's never there with lorries swerving around me as they continue on their limiter. Stupid idea in my opinion.

That AA man is lucky to be alive but it looks like its proper fked him up - still can't work etc

A few deaths and someone will have the bright idea of undoing the whole managed motorway thing and just adding extra lanes like they should have in the first place. This is what you get when you do something on the cheap, a bad job and a load more money spent in the long run doing a proper job to follow it up.

There's already a few deaths on the HS stop scaremongering ?

There was massive opposition to the widening of the M25,

What is your 'sensible' alternative suggestion for widening the M25,M60,M6 thru Brum.

Most killed on the HS are killed by the inattention of others.

Double stack them as they do in other countries. One layer one direction, the other layer the opposite direction. Oh look that's fixed the people slowing down to rubber neck issue too.

You are of course right. There's already deaths on the hard shoulder, a lane nobody is supposed to be in. How would you like to break down on a live inside lane on a badly managed motorway with no hard shoulder? He's hardly scaremongering, just pointing out the obvious.
