Insurance company have specified that I NEED to have a tracker fitted, but I have no idea about these devices and thus have the following questions:

- Any particular makes/models better than others?
- Any to avoid?
- How much should I be looking at?
- Anywhere in the Midlands (Warwickshire)?

(I did try to phone round other companies, but Direct Line whom I have been with for some time were £650 cheaper that Liverpool Victoria, and £1000 cheaper than most other places I was recommended)

If its a case of getting cheaper insurance, go for the basic Tracker model (Tracker Retrieve).

If you're interested in getting the car back asap should it get stolen, consider the more advanced systems: Tracker do the Monitor system that radios in to base when the car moves without you and the Horizon system that does the same but has a GPS receiver, so it can advertise its position ahead of the police searching for it. RAC Trackstar is similar to Horizon, I believe.

Get your OPC to fix one. That way if there is a problem or costly mistakes made by the installer, it's their problem and not yours.

You can argue that Trackers are a quick way for you to find out that your car has been stolen! they are not always as great a way of recovering your pride and joy as the advertising would lead you to believe. That has been my experience

The earlier generation ie original Tracker emits a radio signal which works well but the catch here is that your car needs to be near a police car ie within a 4-5 mile radius of one and critically one which has the necessary pick up equipment. A few forces have very few of these with obvious implications on your ability to get the car back

My car was pinched and recovered with this system because i was lucky enough to have the police helicopter fly over and pick up the signal. However it was a very nervous 24 hours while i just waited wondering what on earth was happening.

The downside is that they may have got it far enough away to strip it down and find the unit - you may find that there are limited places where the devices can be hidden the real profs can shift the car pretty quickly to find the unit

An alternative device is something like a RACTrackstar which has a GPS system which will enable the RAC to tell you where the car is and also inform the Police without requiring the necessary pick up equipment

Its all pretty expensive stuff though and i guess if they really want the machine they will get it - scary!

Thanks for the info.
Looks like the RAC Trackstar looks a pretty good bet.
Anyone had one of these fitted, and are they any good ?!

Thatcham have recently introduced a new standard for Tracker devices; Cat 5. Might be worth looking at those as it will only be a matter of time before the insurance companies start requesting that devices that meet this standard are required.
On one of the reality police TV shows recently it showed one of the traffic cars picking up a Tracker signal. From what the cops were saying it was a very rare occasion that this happened and was very much hit and miss when they did.

Hi All,
Although tracker might be a useful device I particullarly didnt want to have one because of cost and the fact I don't think I would want my car back once the thieving bastards have been through it. Liverpool Victoria accepted me without the tracker and the price for insurance was themost competitive.

I have a 2001 996 Cab.

Just thought to mention it.

Kind Regards

Andy

I have the Tracker Retrieve fitted to one car and the Tracker Monitor to another. The Monitor has the advantage of alerting you when the car is moved without the ignition being on. You get a call instantly on your mobile. This happened to me when I boarded the Eurotunnel and the train started to move - so the system works. It can also save you a couple of pounds when your car is towed away. You probably do not avoid the fine, but at least you do not need to go to the end of the world to collect your car in a scrap yard - sorry Met. Police car storage.
