I'm hoping to purchase a used (98/99 facelift model) Chimaera in the next few months. I've been doing the usual phoning around for insurance quotes and it shocks me how much two companies can differ. Best quotes so far have come from Tesco, Privilege and Directline (who are apparently all the same company anyway). Also, these companies don't seem to make any difference in quote between a 4.0 Chimaera and 5.0 one. Wonder why this is?
For a 25 year old, full NCB and no points in an "ok" postcode based on upto 5000 miles per annum I am looking at about the £1000 mark fully comprehensive but other big companies have quoted up £3000 for pretty much the same policy! Bloody crazy!
Anyway, love the forums, lots of information.

My renewal is in 2 weeks, try the specialists, all the numbers are on here somewhere, A Manning is quoting me £600 on a 4.0 Chimaera, Max Protected NCB, unlimited mileage, car not garaged, no SPN's, 1 recent low value 50/50 fault claim.
The high street companies are a complete waste of time

Try Peart Insurance (they advertise on here) I've got a ban on my license, but still only paid £900 (for a Chim 500) fully comp, with Prot.NCD and unlimited mileage including track day cover. The excess wasnt too bad either.
You could also try NU Direct, they might be able to do something with such limited mileage.

I got a good deal from Sunninghill Insurance.
A 1999 Chimaera 400, valued at £24000, 8000 miles pa, includes track day cover and 12 months full RAC breakdown cover, all for £599, (the first quote I got from one of their competitors was £2500!
).
I recently did a PX for a new Tamora, and despite the different vehicle value, the premium stayed the same. All they charged me was £20 to cover the admin.
Excellent service. Ask for Malcolm.

Because they are both Group 20, even the S series which only has a 2.9 litre engine is still Group 20 .

Yeh, I realise they're both group 20 cars but this doesn't necessarily mean they should both be quoted as the same risk premium. I would say I'm more likely to go and have an accident in the 5.0 than the 4.0? From previous cars I've had at group 17 they were very different quotes. Anyway, I'm not moaning, maybe I'll go for the 5.0 now :-)

That's cause you're applying logic were dealing with insurance companies here

I used tvrinsurance, good deal considering my less than squeeky licence - I forgot to ask andrew manning, he's cheap!!
quote:Cheam were great for me last year, however they have been taken over by someone else (Hill something) & their renewal premium almost tripled for me. I phoned them 5 times to try & get someone to discuss it with me, but no-one ever phoned back on any occasion.
I'm currently with Cheam and due for renewal in 10 days. Sunninghill have given me an extremely competative quote and Cheam acknowledge that Sunninghill are currentlyly their fiercest competition in the TVR market, so it might be worth giving them a go.
I then went with Sunninghill as they were cheaper than my previous year's insurance had been.
Amusingly then Cheam then sent me a letter asking me why I wasn't renewing & that I should phone them. Dagnammit I tried often enough

ahhh, I knew I was thinking the wrong way when talking with all the different companies! haha.
Thanks for all the replies people.

I was with Cheam as well last year. They were take over by Hill House Hammond, and my insurance wqent through the roof. The reason they stated was that Grouprama(?) who had insured me, had taken a big hit on the fibreglass car claims and hence were hiking the prices.
I went to A Manning - 28 year old wife no no claims, me 30 full no claims, new Cerbera, track cover, 7k miles - £750 (tracker fitted).

quote:Sunninghill quoted me £766 for my 1997 Chimaera 500 for myself (32, 3 points, full NCB, 1 claim in past 3 years), wife (30-something, 3 points, full NCB), unlimited mileage, car on private driveway, Tracker fitted.

I'll have to try A. Manning next year.
Right now I'm hunting around for a good quote on my Corrado. Best quote so far is £649 with Adrian Flux, which is only £117 less than the Chimaera!
