Trying to restart the car after driving in traffic, etc, it struggles to turn over, as if the battery is dying.

I thought the alternator wasn't charging the battery, but seems fine.

Any ideas very welcome!

What car is it? Sounds like the starter motor is on its way out.

Crank sensor?

If it spins fast but doesn't catch when hot it's often that.

306 GTI engine.. starter seems fine the rest of the time, spins up no problem in the morning, etc. Just a problem when hot?

Thought it might be this, as it sometimes cuts out approaching roundabout/lights too. It isn't spinning fast though, cranks very slowly, like a dying battery.

MAP sensor. I've had 4 Gti6/Rallye's and 3 of them developed this issue, each time the MAP was at fault. Available for £30 online.

Failing this head to 306gti6.com or 306oc.co.uk, I'm sure someone will have encountered this fault before.

High resistance in the cabling to the starter, gets worse when hot, high resistance equals lower voltage, check and clean your connections and possibly replace the cables, its a problem I've known on my Griffith, and there was a popular add on "hot start kit "

Yep, I've had it before. Jumping it might well get it started, or leave it to cool for a bit. In a push, tipping a bottle of water over the starter might work.

But changing the starter certainly will work...

OP, Prophet of Doom here, I hope your problems turn out to be a starter and wiring / cps issue but the only time I experienced very similar symptoms it was the bottom end about to cry enough!

Basically the engine was trying to partially seize when hot hence the cutting out at idle and slow cranking until it had cooled a bit. At the time the worlds internet experts were convinced the problems were a starter motor / carburetor issue, as was the supplying dealer, until it spun a rod bearing a few days after it had been "fixed"!!

I'd hedge a bet on crank sensor to be honest, they're a common problem in Peugeot engines of that vintage...

Otherwise starter, classic issue.

I Does it struggle like this?
http://youtu.be/BICP1fKwBU0

I had this issue on my old 911, it would start absolutely fine when the engine was cold but would struggle if it was up to temperature.

How old is your battery? My issues eventually lead to a dying battery, once I replaced it the problem was gone. If you can get hold of a mate's battery then give that a go before you splash out on one.

How would a dodgy crank sensor stop the engine turning over quickly? It may prevent it starting, but I can't see it affecting cranking speed at all.

This /\/\
CPS will NOT make it turn over slowly rolleyes
Could be starter wires but being a pug my betting is on an earth issue, usually the one from the gearbox to under the battery tray, after that i'd drop test the main starter wire then every earth you can find, a quick check with a jump lead from the battery neg to the engine block when it happens will diagnose the earths, if the all test out fine i'd suspect the starter itself.

Had the same issues with my Smart Roadster recently. Cuts out when coming to a stop sometimes when the engine is beginning to warm up.

It'll turn over but won't fire up. After 20 minutes or so it'll start up and be good as gold.

Reading up on it and it was the Crank Position sensor. Had it changed and its now working perfectly fine.

The more I tried to start it, the gradually slower it would get, so I imagine it's down to the battery draining ? It only happened maybe twice a week so was frustrating to try and pin point the problem.

So no your CPS did NOT make the car hard to crank over just the battery going flat did, as i said CPS will NOT make the car slow to turn over, so the OPs problem will not be the CPS.
