Hello,
I'm looking at possibly getting a Dawes Galaxy for light touring and commuting duties. I already have a mountain bike and folder, so this would be for longer distances, commuting and hauling the occasion load.
Whilst tempted I don't think I need the wallet lightening experience of a Dawes Super (Dooper?) Galaxy with disk brakes as I won't be hauling massive amounts (likely just laptop, change of light clothes etc).
Plus I often put bikes in the back of the car (estate) and it seems as though disk brakes could be a bit of a faff when removing the front wheel.
Is the Dawes still a respected machine an brand, or should I be considering others as well. If so, what would be alternative recomendations. It would be nice to get something in the £300-£400 range but I'm thinking it might be better to shell out for something that will last.

I can't recommend the Dawes Galaxy enough!
I commute about 10 miles a day and bought a 2014 Galaxy AL in July last year (£600 entry level Galaxy). I absolutely LOVE it! It does a great job, it feels sturdy (it's survived two low/mid speed falls and being broad sided by a transit at 20mph with only a new front wheel required after being punted off!) and looks nice.
I chose the Dawes Galaxy over other options like Claud Butler and Raleigh etc because they have a great name in touring cycles, they come with decent tyres and the groupset does exactly what it says on the tin, 24 gears with a clean and smooth gear change.
We've done well over 1000 trouble free miles and I've only just replaced the brake blocks! (I live in the flat lands of Peterborough so braking isn't a huge issue) and In June we'll be doing the Tour of Cambridgeshire Gran Fondo!

You need to put this over on the CTC forum where you will loads of advice. Possibly some offers of something suitable as well, but be sure to get your frame size right whatever you go for. Good luck in finding something - my son ended up with a `70`s 531 tourer & after effectively rebuilding it with as new components re-made it as a beautiful bike which has gone all over Ireland & the UK. Touring bikes don`t have the same mega expensive top end in reality so £500 should get a very nice outfit I think.
