Connecting DV camcorder to pc
Discussion
I'm trying to connect a Sony Dv camcorder to a Sony Vaio desktop via Firewire cable.
Sounds easy, should integrate nicely and I've got all the necessary software (Sony's version is Movie Shaker, seems like Windows Movie maker would do the same)
Problem is, when I connect the camcorder, nothing happens.
Is there something special I should be doing to get the pc to recognise the camera? I'm using XP, so thought it would be fairly painless.
Any suggestions warmly appreciated.

Yes, as a rule you should just be able to plug in a DV camcorder and have it recognised automatically. Does it show up in Device Manager? If not, or if it's listed with the yellow exclamation mark icon, this would suggest you've got a basic problem with the firewire connection somewhere, which you'll need to resolve.
On the other hand, you mention XP - would that be XP with SP2? If so, then getting it to recognise DV camcorders can be anything but painless... my Sharp DV camcorder, which worked flawlessly with Win2000 and XP SP1, was rendered completely useless by SP2. There is a fix (replacing certain SP2 system files with the older versions from SP1), the exact details of which are listed here:

Be sure to read the entire thread, there's some additional details further down regarding other system files that may need changing in addition to the ones mentioned right at the start...

Apparantly there's a special update for Sony Vaio notebooks that fixes the problem, so I understand. It's not an uncommon problem to find Sony DV's not being recognised on Sony Vaio's.
One on here?

PS This website isn't very Firefox friendly either
so you'll have to use Microshaft Poxplorer.
