Got my car booked in with MB Basingstoke on Friday and they have been really strange about it all. Firstly quoted me £279 for the A Service and then said they if I want a Collect & Drop service or a courtesy car there is a £50 charge on top, but actually if you drop the car off and don't have a courtesy car, they give you a £50 discount as the normal service cost is £329......anyone else heard of this?

They also mentioned that the car should have a gearbox oil change, new airfilters and a brake fluid change, total cost circa £500?!?!

The car is 2 years old and 27k on the clock!

Mine just cost me £210 at Merc derby after a little negotiation. Barter with them as there's still profit in it for the garage.

What "tools and points" did you use to negotiate?

HI Guys, thought i'd give my quick 2 cent,
Yes your car will need brake fluid and filter every 2 years. and i believe thats the first service for the gearbox.

with regards to the price being different if you have a car / collection or delivery, this was correct prior to me leaving Merc, Head office wanted to know if customer's where price driven, or wanted the convenience of a car / C & D.

I know my old branch charged £20 for the difference not £50, BUT i agree with others. Negotiate.
if you have been a loyal customer with that branch , then they should look after you.

Interesting. I just had my A service at Mercedes Watford yesterday. It also included transmission fluid/filters. Car is approaching 3 years old and has 30k on the clock. The bill was for around £700. Seems a bit steep compared to the OP's quote. Good thing it was covered by my service plan.

If it's 2yrs old it should be having a B service plus brake fluid change. Not sure about the ATF on that car - put the details in the Electronic Service Sheet and it'll tell you: http://lite.servicemercedes.co.uk/pc/pc_start.asp?...

Pricing options come from MyService, which should throw up the same work as the ESS but doesn't always: https://www.mymercedesservice.co.uk/home

Dealers used to be open to negotiate on service pricing, but I think Mercedes has leaned on them not to now, so as it makes the ServiceCare service contracts look more attractive. It would be worth looking at that if you're keeping the car another year and it does need an ATF change in that time. Look at when the plugs need changing too - if you'll still have the car at that point then that also might make ServiceCare worthwhile.

Hi your car does not need air filters or atf fluid replacing, as mentioned it is due a B service plus brake fluid.

Supply your own oil mb dealers are selling it on ebay at £16.99 for five litres or £20+ at the dealers parts counter, the dealers charge £15 for one litre when they quote for a service.

I saved over £100 when supplying my own oil for my c43 amg service at a mb dealer, they quoted £281 for the A service which came down to £146 if I supplied the oil, Cost of 10 litres of oil from the same dealer was £34, price paid £180 inclusive of oil.

Your atf fluid, LSD oil ( if your car has one ) and air filters are due at the third service.

Cheers guys, this is useful info, esp about the oil. I will talk to them when I am there. If they won't do me a deal, I'll run down to my local Euro Car parts and purchase. What oil is needed and how much?

Also the car is telling me an A Service is due, so that's what I'm going with. I will discuss the brake fluid change with them as well.

The gearbox Oil & Filter change is around £300+ on its own.

Probably nudging £400 now, all in, at full retail price.

£700 is still a lot for that and a basic A service though. I wonder how much the dealer gets paid by MB under the service plan - I'd imagine it's loads less than the "headline" price?

Looks the same as A0009898301AAA4 which is cheaper from here:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Mercedes-Benz-22...

But it says (excluding AMG performance engines) meeting Mercedes 229.5 specifications.
Anyone know if that is really the case??

Cheers for the help guys. MB of Newcastle sold me 10ltr of the correct oil delivered for £41, MB Basingstoke were sticking with £120 odd.

Also they automatically reduced the cost of the brake fluid and air filter change without me even asking by half.

They were prepared to knock £100 of the cost of the transmission fluid change, but not sure that this actually needs doing. If so, will look at a couple of specialists and get some quotes.

I was sold a service care plan being told that my average service would be around £700(SLS) but subsequent searching on these forums appears to put the price far lower meaning that I'm overpaying. My own fault for not researching properly first!

The SLS monthly does look high, considering its servicing costs don't look much different to other models.

Generally with ServiceCare it depends how you catch the services - not sure on SLS but on lesser models the significant cost items are ATF change at 3yrs and plugs at 4yrs (assuming average mileage).

So if you took ServiceCare to cover those 2 service you'd probably do OKish out of it. OTOH, if you took it for the first two years of the car's life when it needs nothing more than oil changes, with brake fluid and pollen filter at year2, you'd be some way out of pocket.
