Im looking for recommendations for a cheap and decent HID kit from the thousands on offer on eBay.

Hopefully this thread will not fill up with the usual nonsense as the kit will be used to upgrade a set of aftermarket lamps which will only be used off-road on a classic trial vehicle.

It appears that you can now get an H1 or H7 kit delivered from China for £15! I suspect that cheap and reasonable starts a little higher, but I would be grateful if anyone could recommend something reliable at the lower end of the price range, for me.

Are you absolutely set on HIDs?

The only reason I ask is that I was (for the rally car) and for a number of reasons, chief amongst which being the fking Blue Book, I didn't.

In the end I went for some from the Hella Rallye range and they're superb.

If space is the issue they do some tiny ones which could be a good option.

The MSA is something of a grey area, but I have a number of other applications in mind too, including extra driving lamps on a road car and the driving lamps in a Turbo's PU.

I intend to fit HIDs to my Turbo too at some point, but finding suitable RHD dipping (as opposed to flat dip type) projection lamps isn't proving easy.

Since when have H1 and H7 been HID? H1 and H7 are traditional filament bulbs, not xenon discharge.

You don't appear to be as clever as you think.

Halfrauds have a 2 for 1 offer on their bulbs. Ive just fitted the xenon bulbs H7. They give 90% more light and cost £20 for the pair. Look great and no blue tint or overly spread light pattern

Using HIDs on LDTs is hardly in the spirit of the events, some of us can win the Lands End using a solitary 35w bulb!!

Joking aside, a HID would have been nice but when you're in total darkness, it's surprising how effecting normal lights are.

I'd personally stick with decent halogen bulbs, easy to replace if/when they blow - don't forget these will be on & hot while you are bouncing around the tracks at night. Just feel the additional wiring of a budget HID is one more thing to go wrong (talking from experience trying to re-wire an aftermarket tail light at night on a LDT).

Also not forgetting the MCC Ltd police aren't keep on many things like lights and things not in keeping with the event - I nearly got banned for using black insulation tape holding a number on (onto a black motorbike).

I've seen 2 cars point blank refused by MSA scrutineers for HIDs. They had to have fuses removed and taped over completely for competition.

On the Porsche I went for Hellas and they're superb. I've wired them in on a separate loom but so they flick on/off with normal high beams. For those MSA events where only 4 forward beams are allowed I have the option of taping over the sidelights or removing the fuse from the Hellas. Works for me anyway.

The vehicle has normal front lamps and a pair of completely legal Oscars behind the grill Graham. I was hoping that an HID kit would perk up a small form factor spot lamp to use for reversing back down (which you may not be used to on a bike hehe). The alternative is a similarly massive Oscar type lamp which Id like to avoid.

There are enough things that Id like to add HID to now to make asking worthwhile - none of which are dipped beam reflector-type lamps, for the bedwetters.

Makes sense, I guess you'll also need to out-shine all the helpers who appear with torches once you get stuck.

In my Sunbeam years ago the reversing light switch failed so I wired a normal switch into the consol just behind the gear lever - party trick was to turn these on just as you spun away from trafic lights & listening to the panic of horns behind, imagine the childish fun to be had with dazzling reversing lights!!

Whilst we've never had to reverse down the hills, trying to find a crashed bike on Exmoor in the dark is fun - no engine = no lights - dude where's my bike!!
