I E-mailed Chris Brown at lotus. He can look back through the build records for the car.

Take it out on a test run at full pelt.

If the 5hit only comes out of your trousers its 170 BHP, it it starts coming out of your collar its 190

Exige orig came with 177bhp as std. 190bhp was an option or could be retro fitted (also got rid of the annoying splutter at 5.5k revs). You can hardly tell the difference in performance between them (most 190 Exiges hardly manage to develop 180bhp)

Quite a few Exiges have also been modded with diff ECUs (eg Emerald)- so it may not be so straightforward to find out from Lotus the status of your mates. Whatever's in the back it will be plenty quick enough tho'

OMG just picked my mates car up. Fu*k me that thing is quick and its only the 170bhp version. The thing that suprised me the most is the noise let alone the speed.

Can you get a 120bhp S2 to sound the same? i know it wont get the same speed with out some head work but can i get it to sound the same or close?

If the temp hoovers around 82c then it is likely to have the 190 upgrade done - if it is around 89c then probably standard 177.

To get to the full 190 spec there are a number of changes involved - cat pipe, sports exhaust, ecu, air filter removal, thermostat change etc so quite difficult to tell really.

My Exige has just had the full 192 upgrade and I am going on the pistonheads RR day this sat so will be interesting to see what its putting out at the wheels .

Hi Rob,

For what it is worth, I have a S1 111s with a stainless exhaust, performance filter, and cat replacement pipe.

I don't have much to compare it to, but I love the way my car sounds, a sort or aggressive burble on tick over to a throaty roar through the revs, to a wailing banshee at around 6500rpm!

I had put it down mostly to the exhaust but having just fitted a cat' for my MOT my car now sounds more like my Fiesta! So a cat' replacement pipe clearly accounts for an awful lot!

Downside? makes the car illegal (obviously) but never heard of anyone being pulled up for it.

Minor hassle fitting a cat' each year for MOT.

Can be too loud for some tracks.

Needless to say, mine will be going straight back on after the MOT!

Hope it helps

Certainly people have been pulled up for no Cat, or at least I've heard stories of an M3 owner fined 5k. Just don't take the piss I guess. Or use a sport cat.
